Some Canners Have as Much

Year Ago This Date While
Others Have Smaller Amount
' . According to semi-official Information
' : secured by The Journal, the, total pack
of salmon' along the Columbia river this
v year la about, 10 per, cent .greater than
'for the same period a year ago. . .
Borne canners packed from 15 to 25
' per cent more fish tnana year ago at
this time, while inother Instances only
6 per cent Increase was shown. In still
others the pack was sot as great as a
year ago., ,k :
The run of fish, to date and the catch
has been better than a year ago even
though it Is far below expectations of
-packers. Some of the lower river can
ners which make such a small showing
In the output to date, sell . practically
all of their larger fish to the cold utor
" age houses.
Cold storage operations along the Co
lumbia are said to be 26 per cent greater
' than a year ago; although the exact
. " Increase cannot be stated at this time
even .by operators themselves.
Demand for resh salmon Is Increas
ing so fast that It takes about double
the amount of salmon to supply the lo
cal territory as It did a couple of years
go. This Increase Is shown in view of
- the small catch in the .Columbia as com
pared with- the output of a few years
&gK The local fresh fish market Is
therefore compelled to continue the lm-
: portation of Alaskan salmon to fill the
wants of urgent customers. .

-Oil STREET TODAY
Supplies No Larger but Decline
.. Is Caused by Public Opinion
Canning Likely at Present
Price. ,
Loganberries dropped to $1 a crate
for bent quality along Front street to
day,., Somo merchants . were asking more
than' this..
The market showed quite a' heavy
supply of "leakers"' and these .were hard
to move at 75c a crate; , -
TotaL supplies of loganberlies along
the street were not so heavy today and
the price 'dropped from sheer force ot
general opinion. Above the dollar mark,
canning eperatlons would be on a very
small scale and the fruit is not consid
ered marketable for anything lse in its
fresh form. -
It is not likely, however, except tin
der stress of temporary glut, that good
loganberries will sell much below fl a
crate this season, because some of the
heaviest growers Intend to dry all their
surplus. . This alone will remove a very
liberal supply from public offering.
Raspberries were In larger supply this
morning and sales were made at $1.00)
1.25 a crate. ' Few went at the lower
figure, -however. '
Wild blackberries are coming for
ward slightly better and are holding
arouna iuiouic a pouna.t -
Some quite good quality strawberries
came forward this morning and sold up
to 81.75 a crate for 24s.

Portland Union Stockyards. North
Portland. Or.. June 21. ..With lower
prices in effect, the cattle Market is
weak. Poor quality from California is
principally responsible, although similar
quality is snown among many iocai snip
ments. According to Frank S. Sharker of the
Sharkey Commission company, , just re
turned from California, the movement
of California cattle in this direction Is
well nigh exhausted.
" Hogs are firmer and prices are higher
all around. The greater strength in the
east is the principal contributing cause.
Sheep values are down fractionally
owing to the very heavy loads coming
in mis direction.
