Chartering of lumber carriers for this port., whJeh . has been rather slow ,for the pant week or so, has taken a turn ashing and It was learned this morning that two vessels have been taken for lending at Portland. One of them, the Norwegian sU-umer Jothou, 4781 tons net, was fixed this morning by Balfour, Guthrie'' Oo. for a cargo to China, and the o her. the barkentlne Lahalna, was reported as belnp taken for a cargo of lumbor to Australia, f The Jethou, Captain Frlvold. !s now in San Francisco discharging 6500 ton of coal for the government. , She ar rived there. June .6 from Newport News, and an noon as ' she Is discharged she Will proceed to Nanalmo, where ahe will load another cargo of coal for San Franclaeo, after which she will come here to load 3,500,000 feet of Oregon fir for Shanghai. She will be due to ar rive here July 15. - - - . 'The barkentlne Lahalna, Captain Carlson, has been' chartered by J. J. Moore & CL to load lumber at Portland, with the ; option of going to Wiliapa Harbor or Puget sound, for Sydney, at 81 shilling 8 pence, with the Melbourne or Adelaide .- option at 36 hillings 3 pence. The Lahalna arrived at San Francisco Thursday morning 70. days out from Newcastle,' with a cargo of coal for Hind, Rolph & Co. . For a cargo of about 8,500,000 feet of lumber for China, the British steamer Coulsdon, 2789 tons net register, Cap tain Wllford, .will be due to arrive in the- river tonight or. tomorrow morning from Victoria, and will start loading at the Inman-Poulsen mills - on Monday morning. She la under charter to Bal four, Guthrie . & , Co. The Coulsdon brought a cargo. of coal around from the Atlantic seaboard, 200 tons of which was. blacksmith coal for "Vancouver, B. C, the freight rate on which was f 15 a ton A very high rate. The Norwegian steamer El sa, which Is loading a cargo of 8,000,000 feet of lumber, which Is being shipped to Ma nila for the United Statea government by Balfour, Guthrie & Co., is expected to. take, on the last, of her cargo this afternoon, and will probably be cleared before the custom house closes today. STEAMERS HAVE LARGE LISTS Beaver and Breakwater Sail With Many. Passengers. . ." 'Two Harrtman eteamers.'the Beaver and the Breakwater, sailed this morning with full passenger lists, the latter be ing loaded to her capacity with human freight. Both were somewhat late in getting away from the dock because of delay -In getting freight to them, - Aboard the J3eaver, Captain Mason, were 305 cablji passengers, which is her limit, while in the steerage she had 75 passengers, this being considered a good list of the class for this time, of the year. - She - had 2100 tons of general freight for San Francisco. ;, ; f ; ; I The Breakwater,-Captain Macgenn, ' which sailed for Coos Bay, had 110 pas-!
