timber claims, he would, be well paid.
But ha said he did not know how much
he would get. He waa. supplied with

Ke said ho Induced 17 or' 18 men,
ome of whom he had known before, to

xftgreed further to pay from 17S to $100
for each claim after final proof was
made.' .' '
When final proof waa made at Rose

mortgages were taken from each. Tarp
ley enid he did not See Kribs In the
room where the deeds were being? given,
but be heard he was in Roaeburg on
that day. He declared he did not know
what was done with the deeds after
they left his hands; he turned them
over to McKinley, .
Then he. swore he first met .Kribs
April 3, at a ranch house near Sweet
Home, Or.,-where the IS timber claims,
patents to which the government la en.
deavoring to cancel, are situated. The
next day, he said, Kribs, Puter and Mc
Kinley went into the woods with him
and looked over the timber. . ,

When Mr. MeCourt asked him what

entryman. He told of going to Rose-burg,-
on McKlnley's solicitation, and
filing on a timber claim, for which he
got $75, ha said. yesterday's session
produced aeveral sensations.. Four or
five of tha entrymen testified on tha
