Portland Union Stockyards. April 18.
Market for best grade of , cattle Is in
tensely firm and prices are being main
tained In the' yards, ' ,
There Is a lull In the demand' for
sheep and a number of loads of eastern
Oregon stock were carried over, owing
to the lack of bidders.
Hogs are, firm and prices are showing
no changft. . r"
. During the past 24' hours there was
only a small supply of livestock offer
ing. Only two shippers came forward,
and neither cattle nor calves were re
ceived. . '
Regular shipments of cattle from Cal
ifornia grass are expected, and this Is
expected to further ., increase the dull
ness for poor and ordinary quality
Good stuff, Is not likely to be affected
by the grass stock from the south, un
less local shippers send forward poor
stuff. This would cause a break In
values. 1
Oood cwS are very scarce and for se
lected Quality sales are reported In the
yards at $6. This Is the high record
for the local market: ; " r , . -

Meanwhile ; Merchants A!:r.j
: Waterfront Have No Pro
tection From Fires.
.What would happen In case of a fire
on the wtrfront7 That is-a question
which is being asked by more than on
person, as the flreboat George H. Wil
liams, which' 1 Is practically .the only
protection - In some cases, Is now so
journing on the Port of Portland dry
dock undergoing some needed repairs
and having some new plank put In her
bottom.' ' '
Although the flreboat will be off tha
dock In a day "or two, merchants and
other property holdera along the water
front, are wondering what they would do
for a flreboat In case,, of necessity ant
are asking each other: '. "What about the
new flreboat for which we voted a bond
Issue in the last election f ,;v r
The necessity for a new flreboat has
long been recognised by waterfront
property : holders and a question often
asked by them' is when they are going
to. get it They recognise the fact that
no boat can, run year m and year out
without some repairs being necessary,
and they want to know what will hap
pen in case cf fire should-the present
flreboat be , laid up for any length of
time. or. even While it Is on the drydock
for the next few days. . It is also
pointed out that two boats are a neces
sity, as there Is no telling when a bad
fire might break out at each end of the
harbor at about the earns time, in which
case the boat will have to remain away
from, one of them.
