"..yr;' , ' ; : y : Woman Gata JPOslUon. -Seydell was tut of the city much - of the time, and six weeks ago the wife got a position as telephone operator at the Perkins hotel. She worked more than - a month, on several occasions during which time, she " complained of ill-health. Ten days ago she left with out notice and did not return. - Yesterday afternoon the woman got telephone message from friends who were caring for the baby saying-the Child was seriously ill. She left the hntel hastily and when she" returned several hoWs later, was agitated. Sey dell returned yeBterday from a trip in the state, and went to the office of his firm, in the ; Wells Fargw building, t to work. ' ' ? Early In the evening,, his wife telephoned-him to go to her room at the hotel Immediately, He did so, bnt when ha tried tha door he found it locked. In response to his knocks, the woman asked if It were her husband. Almost simultaneously with his assurance a pistol shot rang "out. and the woman groaned, ... ' . v - - - - - Bullet Hole Through Breast ; Soydell thrust his elbow through the glass panel in the door, e He found his wife, -with a large bullet hole through her breast, lying on the bed. She was conscious.- Blood was flowing from the wound. A gash which the glass had cut in Seydell's. arm, was. also bleeding. '...Wife and husband were taken, to the Good . Samaritan hospital In .the Red Cross ambulance. Although seriously hurf, Jra. Seydell will . live. Seydell was out today. . ' ; The ,Sy dells; were married 4 n, Iowa seven - yeara ago. The husband (Is about' 82 years old. . The woman who tried to end her life, ' is extremely pret ty, of a quiet disposition and well-educated. She has been ' 111 for months, and has several times threatened to kill herself. , - S in; nuts T OF ROADS ' Wireless Man Released. . , a (Salem Bureau ot The Joonul.l . 'Salem, Or., -April 1. -John Schuyle man,, a representative of 'the... Qarke Wireless company, accused by 'Fred 6. ''Journal Want Ads. bring results; Judge Webster Heads for Grant : and Harney Counties " 4 ..Wants Bonds issued. , Beginning the middle of April, the Willamette valley is to 'be made the scene of a general good roads campaign,, led by Judge Lionel R. Webster, chair man .,of executive committee of the Oregon Good Roads association, Judge Webster left today for Grant and - HaTrnes counties, where he will spend two 'weeks organising 'branches of the .state good joads association. The trip marks the formal beginning of tha state .wide campaign for better built highways, j Judge Webster , said yesterday; -' .--1- "I am going to hammer away at the constitutional amendment - permitting counties to issue bonds for the building of roads. - That; Is the most Important first point In the campaign. The coun ty should hav greater power.,.' t ' reopls Should Act. .' yfc'sf- ": VMlnd you, I do not seek for the good roads association any legislation" com pelling counties to Issue bonds. I want the .matter' of road building to rest entirely with the people. .. Still I know that many iOregon counties would Issue bonds for road building if tha power to do so had been granted them, . "This year brings a new era In the development of Oregon. Attention, has been called to the Interior of the state as never igfore. . and the response la going to be seen In a tide of immigra tion that will populate hundreds of aquare smiles of rich land before the season has closed. It is tip to the peo ple of Oregon to keep pace with pro gress brought about, by tha Influx of easterners. It is up to the people of Oregon to build roads that. will make their lands accessible. We shall never secure a proper valuation of our prop erty until good roads are ', constructed." It is J udge "Webster's opinion" that the only effective way to : provide for good roads is for the stater county, and property owner to subscribe, eaen one third to the construction and mainten ance-of the -thoroughfares.' So far the individual property owners have mani fested a greater willingness to , subscribe- than either the state or . the county, v, it is taken to. mean that property owners know froiri experience the value of good roads-In contrast with tha ill-maintained, highways they now travel over. . - , , .- , ELABORATE FUNERAL - FOR JAPANESE PRINCE , , , " .."r (United Preii Leased Wire.)
