OF COLLEGE MAN
New York, March 12. The college man
h coming into his own In business. The
time was not so long ago when practical
men of affairs felt rather a contempt
for the college gradifate. But this time
has passed. John S. Thayer, third vice
president of the Pennsylvania railroad,
recently expressed the prevailing Idea
when he said:
"We need men of brains, but brains Is
only one essential' quality. We must
have men who are broadened out, and
above all men who have spirit and can
keep It alive. Wo need men with per
sonal magnetism and men who think,
and this applies even to trackmen. We
need men with tact; even the conductors
must use this every day of their lives.
"I don't say we unfairly prefer col
lege men, because we have In our ranks
men who have the energy to make their
own college out of every day life. We
have manufactured officers In the ranks
In the past, and we must do so In tho
future. We believe, though, that the
man who stands the best chance of ad
vancement Is the one who .has the col
lege education."

The "Swiss Family Robinson."
From the New York Evening Sun.
How the "Swiss Family Robinson"
came to be written and what Its history
has been is told In a note preceding Mr.
Howells' introduction to the new edi
tion of the story, illustrated by Louis
Rhead, which the Harpers nave Issued.
In this edition the name of David, not
Johann Rudolf, Wyss appears as the
author. It appars that the story was
written In the latter years of the eight
eenth century, not by Professor Johann
Rudolf Wyss of Zurich, as book's of
reference generally state, but by his
father. David Wjss of Berne, a chap
lain in the Swiss army. He wrote the
story to amuse his children, and after
his death his son revised ii ana pub
lished It. The first copy was printed
In 1S12 under the tremendous title "Der
Schweltzerlsche Robinson, Oder aer
Schlffbruchlge Kcb weitzerprediger und
Seine Famllie: Eln Lehrrelches Buch fur
Kinder und Klnderf reunde xu Ktadt und
Land " When It came to be translated
into French it was enlarged by Baroness
de Montolleu. the new portions being
later retained by the German publish
ers The English translation here re
produced is the standard one made by
Mrs. Paull in 1 868.
