Loggers who hare been spending sev
eral weeks In the city are beginning to
drift back to the woods again, now that
the enow la melting In the woods back
of the hills tfeat parallel tha course of
the Columbia river. The Intention Is
to get ft number of camps In operation
next week, as the demand for logs Is
good with few of high grade on hand.
Two camps of the Twin Falls Logging
company back of Yaeolt, Wash., . re
sumed operations this week, about 150
men going to work tltere. The Portland
Lumber company Is ready to reaume
operation In its camp on Grays river op
posite Astoria, and the Bradley Logging
company will aejid men to Its camp at
Cathlamet In ft few daya. . A message
from Cathlamet yesterday atated that
the grounds are still covered with snow
to a depth of six Inches In the timber,
but that It la gradually disappearing.
. Tha Standard Box & Lumber com
pany opened ft camp on Arkansas creek
this week, putting SO men to work. This
new camp will cut timber for the mill
during ' the entire summer. ;The loga
will be floated Into the Cowlltg , and
the Columbia. The camp Is not , far
from Castlerock. r , :, ,-.
A dozen or more camps down the Co
lumbla are to resume operations soon,
and during the next few weeks the ex
odus of loggers will be general.

The quarter block 'at the southwest
corner of East . Thirty-seventh street
and Hawthorne avenue has been pur
chased by Zlmmer & Kerstow for $6800.
Several small cottages which occupied
the lot have been removed to make way
for a modern store and apartment build
ing, which the owners plan to erect as
soon as the plans and other preliminary
arrangements are completed.
The ground floor will contain four
storerooms, and the second floor will be
divided Into four and. five room apart
ments. The building, which Is to be of
brick construction and modern through
out, will cost about $20,000.
The southwest corner of Glenn and
Hawthorne avenues has been sold to T.
A.1 Sutherland and R. A. Klnsel for
