glorious victory reported from headquarters. Late last
evening, while the light flsrer) from the glowing ovens.
General Baker gave the order for the first corps to ad
vance. They placed the charge with beautiful precision
where the fire was hottest, and maintained their position
till 2 o'clock this morning, when they withdrew, flushed,
but triumphant, with thirty thousand (30,000) loaves of
Table Queen Bread, piping hot, russet browned and de
licious. These spoils of war are now being distributed
throughout the city, making one-third of Portland's popu
lation "happy 'way down inside."
