Judg F. T. McBrlde, formerly of
Butte, Mont, but who Is now making
his horn In Portland, has let the con
tract for the erection of a nine-room
realdence on Eaat Twenty-third atreet,
between Thompson and B razee. The
building will coat about $8000, and will
be one of the best appointed homes in
that section. Aa soon as the house is
completed Judge McBrlde will remove
with hla family to Portland.
Bowman & Co. have been rnmm!n-
aioned by a local bdilder to get up the
design for a five-room bungalow, to be
erected on East Eighteenth atreet, near
Thompaon. The building la to be an
unusually handsome structure. The in
terior finish will be of the very best
material throughout. Its estimated cost
Is $6000.

THIRTEENTH AND CLAY

has been sold by the Portland Trust
company for Joseph Shemanakl to i
local capitalist for $20,000. The pur-
haser haa under consideration the plan
to build a six story brick apartment
house covering the entire parcel. While
no definite announcement has been
made covering the proposed Improve
ment of the property, it is probable that
construction work will begin in the
next few months.

NAME ARE BUILDERS
Sisters of the Holy Name are having
plans drawn for a three kstory brick
building which is to be erected near
Oawego for use as a provincial house.
The main structure and tha wings which
are to be put up now will cost approxi
mately $100,000.
Architects Doyle & Patterson have the
work In hand. The same firm is also
getting up the designs for a neighbor
hood house which Is to be built In
South Portland at a cost of $35,000. This
structure is to be a three story brick
covering a quarter block.

In the vicinity of Mallory avenue and
Emerson street la to be erected by one
builder six residences ranging In value
from $3500 to $fi000 each.
The builder, J. B. DIckoveV, has built

bouses in Walnut Park, some of which
cost as high as $8000. The dwelllnga

North Yakima, Wash., Jan. 22. The
sherlffa of the etate of Washington,
who met In annual convention In North
Yakima thisvweek, decided to enter an
agreement by which they hope to make
the tracing and capture of criminals
more systematic add effective. Their
agreement was to maintain a mailing
list of all the peace officers of the
state. Each sheriff -will- then send.
his circulars, which shall be numbered
consecutively, to each name on the mail
ing list, and each ons receiving a cir
cular or other notice shall acknowl
edge It. Whenever a criminal described
In" any circular la captured each sheriff
ahall be notified, so that the sheriffs
need not give their time and attention

Pendleton's Condition Exaggerated.
North Yakima. Wash., Jan. 22. Rev.
Morton U. Rose, who went to Pendleton
Or., with Brewer. Schlodfelt, to investi
gate first hand the results of prohibi
tion In the Oregon town, has Just re
turned home and says that the reports
circulated by the "wets" prior to the
fecent local option campaign here wer
grossly- exaggerated. The visit of the
minister and the brewer was the re
sult of a discussion on. election day.

cause he wanted to settle a livery bill.
Gp.orge Fry, 19 years of age, who has
spent several years In the reformatory,
stole a race h6rse from Walter Billy,
a Yakima Indian, and traded It to the
liveryman, T. M. Beatty, taking a 'cheap
horse In return with the livery bill as
"boot." He then turned the horse he
had received loose, Jumped on a freight
train and caftie here from Toppenlsh,
where the trade had been made. He
was picked up as a vagrant, and while
working out his fine was discovered to
be the horso thief. Fry looks upon the
crime somewhat aa a Joke and does not
appear to worry because he is facing a
penitentiary sentence.
