son, then postmaster general, pleased
with the- showing Mr. Brown had made
In handling the artny mail, called him
to Washington and asked him regard
ing a posfc sorting car. The postmaster
general had received his Idea from a
huge wagon which Brown had used b'
tween the various army camps la which
sorting was don enroute, huge boxes
being used Instead of sacks. In this
war' each camp had Its own box. fur
ther sorting being don In each In
dividual camp.
Dennlson and Brown spent some time
making preliminary plans, then started
the first car, between Washington and
Nw York. Then followed tha estab
lishment of a regular postal car ser
vice. On of Mr. Brown's most cherished
posqesalona was a letter h received
from President Lincoln complimenting
him on the manner in which he handled
