tunnel on the Milwaukee, which was
three years under construction. When
the T. M. C A. went there a doccn sa
loons were prospering. ' On payday the
men went to the saloons to get their
checks cashed.-, and usually spent 'all
they had made - Th railroad gave us
a 12300 building and employed a secre
tary, and within a short time the men
were completely won over. Instead of
spending their money for. drink they
gave it to the T. M. C. A. to send home
to their families, and spent their spare
time reading and playing games In the
association ouiiaing.
"Wherever we found a railway asso
ciation we proviaea ror cashing cnecits.
This is usually done by the saloons, but
when the laborers find that the assocla-
