The chief of the weather bureau at
Waahlnarton has authorised the lnsnec-
tlon of ail of the river stations in this
. district, and according to instructions
received by K. A. Beals. district fore-
. caster, the work la to be dona as soon
as practicable. i
' The purpose of the Inspection is to
Insure an acourais and efficient service
during the tints that the flood stages
are on, and in order to do that it is
.necessary to keep the Instruments' in
order, '' ; " '- - , -. - ;
The gauges beoQjne , damaged by one
means or another 'and they -4iave to" be
renewed. . The plana. of reference, or in
other words the sero of , the gauges must
- ps the same always so as not to-tnrow
out the references. There are about 11
stations in the district, ana It Is neces
sary to inspect them every two years or

The steamer Nome City arrived at
Couch- street dock last nignt arter an
. uneventful trip from San Francisco,
-during which she encountered no par
ticularly badweather, although the cap
tain reports that there was a great deal
. of fog and some headwind almost all of

She brought Si passengers and 100
tons of general merchandise, 200 tons
of which was asphalt. She has also a
' large consignment of llmerock and' five
- carloads of bananas which she will dls
charge at the Couch street dock, after
- which she will go to the Portland mills,

towed down to the North Paclfio mill,
probably this afternoon, in order that
her berth port may be dredged out, as
they were unable to get the work done
before she was brought down from the
Portland Shipbuilding ' company's yard,
on account of fhe lack of a dredge. She
will be at the mills about a week or 1Q

With ' passengers and freight the
steamer Alliance will leave at 8 o'clock
tonight for Coos Bay.
The steamer Qeorge R. Vosburg sailed
last nights.-for. sNehalem -with a full
cargo. She will return immediately and
will sail from here again on Wednesday.
'The steamer Daisy will goto South
Bend this afternoon where ehS will load
760,000 feet of lumber. for San Pedro.-
Captain 'S. Scammon' of Jiie steamer
Dalles City has been relieved for a few
. days by Captain W. B. Matheson on ac
count of hlslittls daughter being dan
gerously ill with appendicitis.

St Louis, Aug. XL Four hundred
and sixteen "bucket-shops," extending
from-Jersey City to Denver, are with
out quotations - following the dis
covery of the headquarters of the con
cern which furnished the telegraphic
market Information, operating over a
harness shop here. ,
Immediately following the discovery
of the place, the authorities stopped all
the . Instruments and closed tba rooms
occupied by the officials. .
'The evidence gathered by - detectives
will be submitted . to the September
grand Jury. , - . ' - . -.. .
The finding of' ttte headquarters of
the operators was accidental. Detec
tives were searching for some men sus
pected of running "'handbooks" .. on the
horse races, when - one of them heard
the click of- telegraph - Instruments
above a harness Shop they were pass
ing. '- : ," . . " -
Reinforced by policemen; they4 made
their way into the room and found 10
telegraphers at work and .a force of
clerks writing quotations on black
boards which covered the walla. -
The sleuths then began to trace the
source of the information given to the
officers of the raided concern and found
another office rented by the aame peo
ple in a building overlooking the Cham
ber of Commerce. Further investiga
tion brought to llrht the fact that a
ruan wua.a. spyglass resa tne quota
tions from the board of the Chamber of
Commerce and then telephoned the
itpek quotations to the headquarters
and from there thev were sent to bucket
naps , in qiiierenc cities.

The Alberta disturbance has moved
southeastward to North Dakota and the
high pressure area yesterday over the
upper Mississippi valley has moved east
and this morning its crest overlies the
lake region. The Oregon high pressure
area is moving slowly inland. . The
barometer is relatively low over Callr
fornta and southern Arizona and also
along the east gulf coast. During the
last 24 hours light rain has fallen at
scattered places in the Rocky mountain
states, along the gulf const and in the
mliitlle Atlantic - and New - England
states. It Is ' much cooler in Oregon,
Washington, southwestern Idaho, Brit
ish Columbia and the- Ohio valley, and
correspondingly warmer in the Great
Salt Lake basin. Wyoming,- Nebraska
and the DRkotas.
The indications are for fair weather
in this district tonight and Sunday,
with rising temperatures Sunday. - it
will be cooler tomght in Idaho. -'
