today when It reached tha hisrhest tirloe
in the United States at the Portland
yards by touching . $9.06 per hundred
pounds.
Breaking the former high record
made' yesterday at 89 today's hog mar
ket was most excited ever seen here
and it . was with - perhaps no trouble
that a sale of 73 head was made at the
extreme high-point. - . -
The hogs weighed a fraction over 164
pounds each and considering the quality
was far. the best sale ever made in this
or any other market. The lot was
shinned In by A. R. Ford of-McMinn-vllle.

was under the control of steel and iron
'shares today, but Rook Island railroad
shares scored the greatest advance, with
considerable demand. Common went to
37, and. closed within a few fractions
of that crloe.
- Amalgamated Copper and American
Bmener were ootn gooa leaders, wun
an advanoe of nearlv a nolnt in each Is
sue. Northern Pacific was firm, with
4 point' gain to' its credit at.he close.
Union Pacific was steady and higher,
but Southern Pacific closed with a loss
O.I a small fraction.
The Iron Trade Review says: "New
signs of increasing prosperity are con
stsntly aonearinar. but times of cros
nerlty brinr their troubles as do periods
of depression, and some large compa
nies are hiving difficulty filling their
contracts. . One Independent concern
purchased 6000 tons of steel, bars from a
steei corporation company, nut ins spec
ifications for a considerable tonnage
did not prove satisfactory, and only a
riart of the order wilt be filled. - There is
almost a billet famine in the east, : One
importing company operating all Of it
open hearth furnace capacity can . not
firoduce enough steel to supply its fla
shing mills. . No large tonnag can be
bought anywhere In the east, and $26 at
