Throughout District. -
Only once since 1871, when the record
- began. has there been a greater amount
of preciptatlon recorded on the Fourth,
;" and that was. In 1900, when there was
O.JI0 of an inch, the recorded fair for
thla Fourth being1 0.25 of an Inch, up to
10:80 last ' evening.' Up to 10 o'clock
this morning the total fall, since it be-
-; Kan to f rain on the Fourth, was- 1.19
:' ' . On the 1st, 2d ftnd 3d of July In 1907,
- the rainfall was exactly the .same as
the fall' this year, during- the 4th, 6th
' and 6th, up to 10 o'clock, the total fall
" for that year being 1.19 of an Inch,
- There were light sprinkles ' at inter
, -vals from 0:30 to 8:30 on the evening
of the Fourth, and at 8:80 the heavy
rain set in, 0.23 or an inch " tailing by
10:30 -that night. Tracea of rain oc
curred during the early morning of the
' 6th and a steady rain fell during the
c afternoon and night, ending about mid-
night.- Rain set in again about 4:80 In
. the morning of the-8th - and has con
tinued since, 0.58 'of an inch having
fallen up to 9 o'clock this morning.
District Forecaster Baals says that
the ram la general throughout the dls
. trlct, and although In some of the places
; the precipitation has been rather light,
in Portland It has been extraordinarily
heavy for this time of the year. Mr.
Beals says that ha looks for clearing
weather tomorrow.
-He said also that he did not think
. the rain would do any damage to the
: early grain, and it would do untold good
to the late crops. . .

was not so heavy as here, the last re
ports, at 8 o'clock this morning being)
Umatilla, 0.8 of an inch; The Dalles,
0.20 of an inch; Vancouver, 0.90 of an
Inch; Salem, 1.04 inches and Albany 0.88

At only one plaoe does tha river show
any rise, which la at Salem, the rivet
having come up 0.1 of a foot in the
last 24 hours,

The lighthouse tender Manaanita la
: expected to arrive in Seattle from Alas
ka; in a day or two, with Ir. Henry 8.
' Prichett, civilian member of the light
house board, who has been up in that
country for- several weeks. Dr. Prlchett
went up to Alaska on the Mansanita
about .four or five weeks ago, where he
has been loooklng up sites for aids to
navigation in the southeastern part of
the country. He will come down here
from Seattle, to - confer with - Captain
jBUlcott, end will probably -remain here
two or three days.

the Hammond Lumber company is send
ing to Han Francisco, and on the fifth
lie sighted the tug Sea Rover with a
raft in tow, 14 miles 'northwest of Capo
Mears, or 43 miles south o the Colum
ula bar. The latter was sent' -by the
Benson Lumber company to Ban Diego.
The steamer carried about 300 pas-t-f-ngers
and a full cargo from San
Francisco, and although there were light
northwest winds and the weather was
cloudy, the sea was smooth.

German Ship Oregon and French
Bark Desaix Have Arrived. '
Two of the grain carriers which left
here this year have arrived at the ports
where they will receive orders. The Qer-
which sailed from Astoria on the second
of February arrived yesterday at Fal
mouth, and the French bark . Desaix;
Captain Oiateauxieux, entered Queens
town harbor.
The Oregon carries 115,808 bushels of
wheat, sent out by O. W. McNatr, and
the Desaix has 100,138 bushels of wheat
dispatched bv Kerr. Glf ford & Co. .-.a

decision handed down today. She had
obtained a favorable decision in the cir
cuit court ..for Multnomah county be-

preme eourt holds in sn opinion by Jus
tice Slater -that no negligence was com
mitted on the part of the workmen, ; as
it was shown by the evidence they were
placing supports under the building at

the running board of an engine while
at work, and alleged negligence on the

"stripped" engines and therefore that
