J. B. Knapp of ths local office of the
forest service, has returned from Seattle,
where he attended the opening of the
A.-T.-P, exposition. Mr. Knapp is en
thusiastic over the exhibits which the
forest service 'has installed n. Seattle.
The main' exhibit of ha service is
located In the government building, ami
attracted- much favorable comment of
a thousand visitors who attended the
fair on the opening day. - The exhibits
consists, chiefly, of large bromides and
transparencies showing views of forest
areas and logging operations. These
are mounted In suitable cases and are
very impressive because of their-sUe
and beauty of ths natural coloring which
nasoeen aaaea to me pnotograpns ay
frovernraent artists. Sections of Doufr
as fir and redwood trees . are also
shown. ' . These sections - wers taken
from the trees at points 10 feet apart,
for their full height; and are, accom
panied by diagrams which explain tho
growth of these two species. .The r
mnlnlng floor space is . covered with
cases and stands showing photographs,
samples of wood, paper pulp, and other
wood products. -
The forest service is also operating
a completely- equipped timber testing
laboratory In 'the machinery building.
Here the regular timber test work of
the service is under way. - Each after
noon at 3 o'clock, a large bridge tim
ber "8x16"- In cross section and 1
feet long Is tested. This timber is
placed in a large testing machine, and
is then loaded until it is completely
broken. - The timber Is then sawed ln
to small pieces and tests are made on
these. Other sample tested speci
mens of vsrlou manufactured forms,
such as wagon axels, buggy spokes,
shafts and wagon poles, are also
shown. Charts showing ths strength
of all of the principal American struct
ural timbers are also on exhibit

year. Edmonds is a negro and he was

In the last days of December, 1807. He
claimed that Ruhl abused and assaulted
him before he struck the fatal blow. -
Petition noi-rer Pleads Guilty-Allen
O. Ross, one of the men who circulated I
the excise board petition, pleaded guilty
to the charge of perjury, and will be
sentenced . for perjury by Presiding
Judge Bronaugh In the circuit court
next Tuesday. He pleaded guilty to
the charge yesterday, thereby confess-
in to the ra se certitlcation or rorgea
names on the petition, the acknowledg
ment being taken berore Francis I. mc
Kenna. The possible sentence is from
two to five years in the penitentiary.

Scott Robinson was sentenced to serve
three years In the penitentiary by Cir
cuit Judge Qatens yesterday , on a
burglary charge, of which hs was con
victed by a Jury. He had Just begun

THROUGH ATTORNEYS
Notice of appeal has been filed hv
the attorneys for W. E. Douglas, who
was convicted m April on the charge
of embezzling $25 from the Thlel De
tective agency. An appeal was not ex
pected, as Douglas was sentenced to
serve only five months in Jail and
nearly two months have elapsed since
his. conviction. If the appeal is per
fected and -a new trial is ultimately
denied, he will get no credit for the
time he has spent In jail.
Douglas was twice tried on different
charges, the total sum he was alleged
to have embessled betng nearly $5000.
On the first trial the jury disagreed.
The last time the Jurors were out over
two days, finally agreeing on a verdict
after Judge Morrow had appealed to
them not to make another' trial neces
sary. Ho was then found guilty of
embexzllng only $25, and it was ex
pected that the defense would accept
this as final. ,
