rThlcaaro. Inrll IS. The sharpest ad
vance of the season at Liverpool and at
other foreign markets today gave the
Patten crowd an advantage this morn-
ng that worked against tne Dears an
day. New high records were mode in
th May and July but the other options
generally ruled a- fraction lower than
tha extreme of vesterdav. The market
closed sharply higher for the May and
a iracuon up . ror tne juiy oui vaiuea
in . the September ' and December were
lower. . .. i ' .
That Patten has not deserted his pet
the May option was clearly demon
strated today when some extensive buy
ing was said to have come from his
house, It is stated that most of the
buying was from shorts, which means
that the latter are still determined to
undermine the King of. the Pit by some
means or otner.
When Liverpool came i Sd higher
today it was the signal for some heavy
short covering In the nit here. This
carried the May and July to the highest
point or tne present year as wen as
for many former seasons. May went
to 21.28 aa compared with yesterday's
high at 21-26 and July moved sharply
higher to 21.17 as compared with yes
terday's high record at 2115.
The traae in general has begun to
believe that the present high price, of
wneat nas more tnan aiscounten any
possible damage ' at . this time of the
growing-crop and - f or ' that - jeason" was
a seller or the September- and Decern-

Ratify Wisconsin Control.
f Milwaukee. Wis., .April 18. Stock
holders of the Wisconsin Central Rail
way company met in this city today and
ratified the recent agreement by which
the control of the road passes into the
hands of the Minneapolis, St. Paul &
qault Ste. Marie Railway company. The
stockholders of the, latter road already
have approved the deal, which has now
become an accomplished fact.
The Soo road has not bought the Wis
consin Central in legal actuality, al
though substantially that 1 what has
been done. The Soo has leased the lat
ter 'road for 99 years, and at the same
time has acquired 81,000 shares of the
common stock of the Wisconsin Central.
It also has control of the preferred
stock, by an exchange plan under which
former holders of Wisconsin - Central
preferred received new Boo line certlfl
catea instead.

DISTRIBUTING SCHOOL .:
1 .yUSPS IN -UMATILLA:
'Hpec1al'llspatch te The Journal.)'
. Pendleton. Or., April 12. The larg
est apportionment of chool funds In
Umatilla county Is being made by.
County Superintendent Welles. The t-- .
tal amount to be distributed is a little
more than 238,000, or about 26 for each
boy and girl of school age In the county..
The apportionment is based upon th
census taken In November, 1907, as th
law provides that It shall be mad on
th basis of the census contained In the
last general reports of the school dis
trict clerks. The last reports were made
In June and were based on the census
taken the preceding fall,
By this apportionment being so large
th one to be made in October will be
vry small. Since practically all of the
county taxes have already been paid,
there will remain little more than the.
state fund to be apportioned. If all the
taxes were paid when due ther would
be nothing but the state fund to be
apportioned In October. - - ' if
