JOKE COSTS
V
Man Who Held Up' Citizens
With Finger 3fyist
:'. Serve Year." ' , v
To spend rf1 ywr in tlw penitentiary
beeaue lie perpetrated a joke on the
wrong persons is the fate of Jack Horn,
whose sentence' was .'pronounced' in
Judge Karnaugh's department of ',the
circuit court yesterday.
- Horn was indicted by 'the grind Jury
charged with assault with intent - to
rob. The evidence introduced In the
case brought out the ' fact that Horn
had held up three men last December
by pointing his finger at them, but be
did, not get any money, nor was there
any evidence to show that he made a
demand for any, Horn says that he
was drunk' and had planned to meet
some friends on the north side. He
says that it was dark and that he saw
three men ahead who he thought were
his pals. He approached the men, and
pointing his finger at them, told them
to throw up their hands. To his sur
prise they all hastily complied with his
command. .
Horn says that he then discovered
that he was mistaken in the party and
was about to go on bin way when Of
ficer Oeli came up and arrested htm.
In pronouncing- sentence Judge Bro
naugh said that the jury had found the
prisoner guilty and he was therefore
powerless to make the penalty lighter
than , the law. required. ; The eourt said
that -Horn's good record' was in hie
favor, and an indeterminate term was
Imposed. Thia is the minimum penalty
allowable and the prisoner's release at
the end of one year depends solely upon
his behavior during his imprisonment.
MEN WHO STICK
WIN FQRTUNES
r i '
"Men make lucky strikes in
Alaska golu fields are trine times out
of ten men who stick to it," said M. C.
Thompson, a miner who "struck it
rich." near Fairbanks, at -the Oregon
hotel last night. Mr. Thompson has
been visiting relatives in California and
is now returning to his mines. His own
experience is proof of his statement.
He went to Alaska ten' ears ago. Six
years he toiled in froxen earth without
finding the show of gold. When his
provisions ran out he worked for oth
ers until he had enough to start for
himself again. Now he has four out
fits working for him, and other men
whom he calls "scouters," out pros
pecting along the creeks.
"No one. so far as I have learned, his
ove- discovered Just how deeply the;
ftroond is frosen," he said, talking of
lis experiences. "One of the shafts on
nv own holdings was sunk 300 feet be
fore finding placer, and at that depth
the earth was still frozen. Conditions
are practically the same, winter and
summer, for at no time is the earth
ever thawed to any considerable dls-ta-ice.
Mining operations go on the
name during winter as in summer.
