Lumoer company of La Grande has pur'
chased the Wallowa and Union counties'
holdings of the Cresset Lumber com
fanv of Iowa, ' The deal .Involves about
0,000 acres and the price is $700,000.
The land lies adjacent to the Wallowa
river, between - Its Junction With the
Grand Ronde and, extending east of
Mlnura river. ' ' , ' ;- -.-
The transaction is believed to but
a preliminary move on the part of the
Palmer Lumber company to sell Its en
tire holdings of mors than 100,000 acres
to a Chicago syndicate. This deal la
pending ana is expected to be closed as
soon as the experts sent out from Chi
cago' can complete their report.. 'The
experts spent -many weeks in ."vV al
lows ana union counties, cruiwni um
timber and running section lines. If this
transfer ia made, and it seems assured
the price will be about $2,000,000. In
addition to the timber lands owned by
. the. Palmer Lumber company it operates
a sawmill at La Grande with a capacity
' of between -200,000 and 800.000 feet a
; day. This will be' Included in the deal.
The ' Palmer- company is at present
operating a logging camp about 12
miles from Elgin, employing 120 men.

slowly eastward. No very high winds
have yet occurred In - conection with
this disturbance and the rainfall so far
has been light and confined to the coast
stations, extending from Cape Flattery
south to San Francisco. Mild tempera
tures continue on the Pacific slope. The
eastern storm, which is exceptionally
severe, is central near the New Eng
land coast. Rain turning to sleet and
snow has fallen in the northern states
east of the Mississippi river. Tha east
ern storm' is being closely followed by
a severe cold wave with sero tempera
tures, extending this morning as far
south -as northern - Missouri- and with
freezing temperatures extending nearly
