The snow, storm has practically put
river shipping out of commission, hut
most of the boats tied up today are ex
pected to .resume operations tomorrow,
- unless conditions should become worse.
Especially severe weather has been en
countered on the unner Columbia river.
The Open River Transportation com
pany's steamer . N. Teal did not leave
tor The Dalles this morning; because of
the storm. It was with difficulty she
wa brought to. her Portland berth lost
night, the snow driving- so hard on the
upper river that it waa next to impos
sible to see shore. The whirlwinds, too,
made it hard to manage the .boat.
The steamer Sarah Dixon of the same
line will probably reach here tonight,
and It depends entirely upon the tem
perature whether or not the will . be
sent out' again tomorrow morning.
There is danger of the locks at Cas
cade f reeling solid, In which event it
would be useless to attempt to keep up
the service unless, it oould be arranged
to transfer from one boat to another
around the locks.. Large quantities of
tea are supposed to have formed In the
upper stretches of the river, and when
this breaks loose navigation will be Im
peded by it.
Nearly every towbost. in the harbor
Is tied up, the entire Shaver Transpor
tation company's fleet being at the
company's moorings. ; The boats were
ordered bom reaterday after It had
been discovered that the storm was of
mora than ordinary severity. To tow
log rafts in the strong wind and blind
ing snow would have bean a risky un
dertaking, and so the company sent
word lor me Doata to return to ron
ton .
Ocean steamers manage to keep on
schedule, however, as will be seen from
aha fact that the steamer Homer. Cap
tain Dorrla. left OaJc street dock at 8
e'clock for San Francisco. She should
have left at 8; but there was a. little
delay in getting freight and passengers
on board, and it was 9 when sha passed
through the bridges. -
The oriental liner Numantla reached
Astoria this morning and without delay
crosaed out Sha left here yesterday at
11 and anchored off Keeders for a few
hours last night during the worst of the
storm. he Mm schooner Thomas L.
Wand, bound to Ban Francisco with a
cargo of lumber, crossed out With the
Numantla.
Three coasters and two sailing ves
sels are on the way up the river this
afternoon, the coasters being the steam
er Alliance from Cooa Bay, the steamer
Eureka from Eureka by way of Coos
Bay, and the gasoline sloop Condor from
Newport The sailing vessels are the
American achooner William Bowdenand
the British bark Carmanian. The Wil
liam Bowden is bound for the mills of
the North Pacific Lumber company to
load lumber for California, and the Car-,
manian is bound for one of the harbor
warehouses with 1900 tons of cement
from Hamburg.
The Alliance and Eureka are'expect
ed to reach the harbor about 8 o'clock
this evening.

The craft's mission is not known, but

Tho Majestic is a laraa craft, roaister
ing about 1800 tons net. At first It was
supposed that she was being sent north
by the American-Hawaiian Steamship
company, but local agents of that con
cern say they have received no advices
to the effect that the steamer is com
ing to them, although it Is understood
that a steamer will possibly be sent
hero soon to take car of shipments
from tnta port tor tne Atlantic sea
board by way of the Tehuantepec rail
road. The Majestic should arrive here
Saturday. . . ,

with two large whistling buoys that are

several years and In the meantime have
been handled roughly by the restless

been doing work along the coast of
Alaska and in Puget sound waters for
several weeks. On her way down ths
river two spar buoya will be placed as
additional aid to navigators.

heavy rain or snow in Oregon,' southern
