. (United Pre Leased Wire.)
San Francisco.; Dec4 31. Pledges 4f
financial support have poured In to the
executive committee appointed toy the
California shippers, who are protesting
against the proposed advance in rail
road freight rates by the transconti
nental lines In this state. As a result
of the meetings held throughout the
state yesterday by growers, merchants
and manufacturers, the agricultural and
commercial interests of California ar;
now united in a common cause and
promises of aid have been received, from
all sections of the state. ; ... - .
- It is possible, action will be taken by
the shippers to enjoin the change in
rates before Saturday, the date the In
crease goes Into effect.
Conservatles in Majority.
Resolutions passed at many of the
meetings yesterday refcommended that
legal steps be -taken to prevent the
raise. The more conservative shippers
and parties Interested, however, are
averse to aucn arasuo action, x nvy iw

tuted, would ultimately do the protest
ants as ninth harm an the railroads.
The resolutions adopted by the vari
ous meetings are similar. The shippers
of the state determined at their meet
ings to request the legislature and the
government to inquire into the trans
portation conditions in California, with
a view to securing: better regulation
of common carriers In the state, and
decided to call the attention of the leg
islature, congress, the president and the
Interstate commerce commission to the
protest being- made. -
Panama Ball Sates.
Her, and at some other plares, ,4 It
was recommended that the attention of
the national administration be called to
the fact that the Panama Railway com
pany Is apparently basing its rates upon
a certain proportion of the transconti
nental rail tariff and that. Instead of
giving the relief to the California ship
pers which the road has given in the
past, ' it is in the anomalous condition
of having its rates determined by the
transcontinental railroads.
Sentiment is rapidly crystallising in
favor of the proposal to petition for
government steamship service between
here and Panama. ,
