beaten out of $1,155, T. E. Hills, pro
prietor of a grocery store at 23$ Larra
bee street, is today suing J. D, Swank
and C, -A. Williams, the former owners
of the grocery, In the circuit court
Hills complains that when he purchased
the store, Williams and Swank repre
sented to him that the goods, then In
the place, were - worth $3750, whereas
they were really worth but $2595. He
says that he paid them $250 and in addi
tion gave them a deed to a piece of
groperty in Grants Pass worth $3600.

Buck Stove and Range company, who is
also president of the .National Associa
tion of Manufacturers.
Van Cleave is one of the most prom
inent' enemies of organised labor In
America. He led the fights at the
Chicago and Denver national conven
tions last summer -against the anti-ln-Ju
net Ion planks proposed for the plat
forms of the Democratic and Repub
lican parties.
The Buck. Stove and Bangs case has
been in the courts in one phase or an
other for several year.
Gompers, Mitchell and Morrison, who
were in court when the opinion was
read and gave notice of an appeal, were
released on bonds of f 5000, $4000 and
$3000 respectively.
Vanoleave Pleased.
St. Louis, Dec. 23. J. W. Vancleave,
president of the Bucks Stove & Range
company showed by his actions today
that he was well pleased with the de
cision of Justice Wright today seu
fencing .Samuel Gompers, Frank Morri
son and John Mitchell of the A. F. of
L. to prison. He refused to discuss the
decision, however, dismissing the matr
ter by saying: "I think it is better
not to make any comment on the de
cision now."

action of justice Wright in sentencing
Gompers, Mitchell and Morrison to jail,
local officials of organised labor did not
hesitate to characterize the proceeding
as an outrage, and declared that its ef
fect would be to more closely unite the
various labor organizations, and at the
same time earn for the federal courts
the contempt of all fair-minded'' men.
, "The senteno is an outrage," said
X. J. Parkinson, managing editor of the
labor press. . "X cant find words to ex
press my indignation at such a prooeed
tag. The Federation of Iiabor, to a man,
approves the action of Gompers, Mitch
