Turkey Market Is Advanced.
The eagerness of buyers to take hold
of turkey supplies even at advanced
: ! prices Is a wonder of the present mar
ket along- Front street." While the
Puget sound cities purchased, prac
tically all the cold storage birds re
maining: here from the Thanksgiving
v trade the north is after supplies more
than ever and Is willing- to pay a fur
ther advance, even for storage stock.
So little of this remains In the Portland
market at the present time that it can
' scarcely be counted as t market fae-
r' Advance Is Unexpected.
. While other local papers were entire
ly wrong in their Thanksclving predic-.-
tions regarding a general scarcity of
supplies and are now predicting inai
there will be a sufficient number of
turkeys to go around, the trade is not
of this opinion, although the high fig
ure to which the price has flown will
cut oat much of the consumption. With
turkeys at their present high price
along Front street it will be impossible
. for retailers to sell the best birds un
der 30, or possibly Joe a pound al
though, some ordinary goods may rule
as low as 26c. Along Front street the
wholesale price today for best dressed
turkeys was 26c a pound. This is for

figure in view of the fact" that live
birds invariably dress out a large per
centage of "culls" and these are soid
under the regular market.
Eastern ClUUed Turkeys Here.
While It la unlikely that there will
be even liberal supplies here of local
fresh birds the market is not likely
to suffer from any famine, according to
nresent Indications, although such a
thing Is possible under the present state
of affairs,' Eastern packers have
brought in cars of chilled birds and
these are now offered to the local trade
but will not find much or a sale until
It Is found that home supplies are en
tlrelv exhausted. As during the Thanks
giving trade, the northern buyers have
made tne same misuuce again or try
ing to depress values before they had
secured the goods. With all their talk
of an over-supply of eastern birds the
Puget sound cities were very- heavy
purchasers of Oregon dressed turkeys
along fTont street auring tne past 2t
hours: this indicating that the arrivals
there were not so heavy as the trade
would have producers believe.
Danger of Hlffb Prices.
To the- producer there is danger in
the present high prices on turkeys.
' because the consumer will not buy in
such a hurry as if values were tat their
normal height. This will mean disas
ter to the market if arrivals are at all
liberal, which they were hot up to this
time. However, there are several days
in which arrivals will come forward
. and on that account some of the trade
' has been unwilling as yet to name a
price to sell at. ,
Brief Votes of the Wholesale Trade.
Plenty of oysters are now offered the
trade.
Eggs while holding firmer, are un
changed In price.
There is a firmer tone in better
,: grades of local creamery ' butter at
i unchanged values.
Chicktin prices are still low. but
the movement is better.
Orange sales show an improvement.
No change in price.
Vegetable supplies are quite scarce;
HO cauliflower coming forward.
Market for potatoes is firm but rather
, quiet. '
. - Trade in the bop market is still quite
. good considering the holiday season.
Movement of apples from Front street
in much more liberal and the market is
. firmer. '

Will Do Better After Christmas.
I believe the hog market here will
do better after Christmas." said Tom
Benson of T. C. Benson & Son. "The
run is decreasing somewhat and will
probably continue to do so for awhile.
Of course the future of tle market
here depends somewhat upon what the
eastern price 'does as packers bring in
large portion or tneir supplies rrom
thr abntit this time of the vaar. I
am of the opinion that prices will hofd
quite good. Cattle are coming faster
than expected ana there will likely be
a slower tone in all livestock during
