"Porced to make an equal basin In
sugar prices for Idaho points by com
petition of eastern sugar interests. Pa
cific coast refineries are today charg
ing 85c per hundred pounds more for
sugar for delivery to Oregon and Wash-,
ington than they are for delivery at
a longer distance In Idaho.
The discrimination against the con
sumers of the two coast eta tee was fur
ther widened the past week when refin
ers made a cut of 15c per hundred to
Idaho sugar -values. Formerly the dis
crimination against tidewater was
fOc, so this made the royalty 65c for
living In a section where there was no
competition. Before the easterners ar
rived in the Idaho territory the dis
crimination was only 10c per hundred
founds this difference being caused at
hat time by the influence of beet sugar
competition and not to any outside In
fluence. That every move of the coast refin
eries Is Instantly known to their so
called competitors la shown when "one
ef Inerv, makes a change In values, simi
lar action IS taken by the other grind
ers so that practically at all times In
recent years Pacific roast refiners have
announced uniform values.
That the eastern grinders can secure
a large per cent of their raw sugar from
the Hawaiian islands, ship it all tho
way to the Atlantic ports for manu
facture, - then ship to Idaho with Its
consequent heavy freight charge and
still sell sugar 65c per hundred pounds
lower than our coast refineries can do,
with their leaner expense, is almost un
believable. Still It Is a fact.

While It is Impossible to say definite
ly how the turkey market will stand
for the Christmas trade the indications
were never better for good prices for
producers. . Alreadv . the market has
reached 24e a pound for fancy dressed
stocks In tho Front street market, but
this is about the limit because beyond.
that price the cost at retail will be so
high that It will only take limited sup
plies to fpd the demand,
v With dressed turkeys at 24c or pos
sibly 25c for the best stock at whole
sale It Is impossible for retailers to
sell and deliver supplies,' pay their big
rents and other expenses under 30a or
possibly 86c a pound, and this price is
rather excessive for the public to pay.
Therefore It can now be said that if the
supplies are at all liberal there will be
more than plenty to go around and this
will hurt the price. At such prices' as
are now In effect the consumption Is so
small that he ivy arrivals would wreck
quotations.
Chicken price:; broke herivlly during

Mexican millers are buying large
supplies -of wheat in this terri

wheat crop of Mexico the past
season has caused a famine in
supplies of bread there because
of the high import duty on
wheat.which up to this time has
practically kept foreign supplies
out of the Mexican markets. Now
to avert a famine the Mexican

New Vork. Dec. 19. Sobered by the
discovery that Canadian Pacific invaded
New Tork city, demanding a share of
freight which the other railroads are
compelled to let It have, on account of
Its superior position in regard to the
mileage and capitalisation, the Wall
street rahlers paused today. Word was
passed out from hlgit plares to stop
smashing and get th market quiet
again. This was addressed particularly
to those who have been building one
smelter In Utah and a string of them on
the ticker tape. Smelters stock recov
ered still further and the Harrlman
shares became a tower of strength.
Careful consideration of the Canadian
Pacific development has led conserva
tive oanKers to a belief that It will not
disturb the stock market very much at
present. A pretense Is going to'be made

The annual shame pf the Pacific North

the livestock market' With a country
and climatic conditions that could not
be bettered no matter where you ; look,
Oregon , and in ' fact all Pacific coast
packers are -aln foreed to briny their
hog supplies from -the iast it
This condition has been repeated every
season during Iste rears the supplies
from east of the Rockies to this sec
tion increasing every , year. With a
trade that Is fast Increasing a smaller
number of hogs by far are being raised
here, While the total-number of hogs
held in the state has been slightly In
creased during the past two years the
Increase Is small tn comparison with
the increasing demand and this ts what
forces the packers for their, own pro
tection to bring in a larger number of
hogs from Nebraska and other points
each season to run their plants. -
' How to Increase Holdings- '
1 With hog price here the highest- In
the entire country and with quotations
profitable to producers from every point
of view, the producers of this section
have been very slow in adding to.thett
hog holdings and this Is why entire
tralnloads of hogs are annually brought
from east of the Rocky mountains, to
fill the nfced of oackers. Instead of
being able to Increase' ihelr output of
packed meats from the supplies of hogs
offered by local people the packers are
forced to utilize eastern hogs for most
of their operations.
Hog prices here advanced again early
In the week but today there was a drop
Af iar the first for some time be
cause hogs could be brought In from
Nebraska points at a cheaper rate, qual
ity for qualltv. Now that they are able
to hrlna- suDDlles from other sections

shown generally among the week s ar
rivals it would be a long guess to say
what the market would have done for
better goods. However, the inquiries
are all for fat sheep.
A year ago for this same week there
was continued nrmness in nogs ana cat
tle, but sheep were easy. All lines
sold at unchanged prices.
Past week's arrivals of livestock com
pare with the same period in receat
years as follows
