Twas a Christmas eve, nd the wind

The snow lay thick o'er vale and -hill.
And in art; humble cot on a bleak hill

The snow lay deep at the cottage door

At the little one heard that story dear
To every chlldisn neari.
She lifted her tender eyes and said,
"But "drandma," where Is he now?
And where are the nice wise men?
Oh I wish he was here, or we knew him,
fth I wish we oould go to see the Babe,
Th,t wa mn arnntle and kind.

If we could that Babe find.

That can calmly set these wants aside.

WRITES TWO BOOKS
H
By K. R. W. '
Two of the new holiday books which
are especially Interesting to Portland
people . because of the work of a Port
land girl which aDpears in them, are
Carolyn Wells' "Year Book;" and the
T.,nrisi L,egenas, ny SelniA Lagerlof,
translated - from the Swedish. Miss
Bertha Stuart, formerly of Portland,
who has many friends here who have
Watched' her carenr with much ln('.ri
has done the -covers of ; both and the
mnrgmai aecorations or tne latter. Sev
eral of her sketches also Illustrate the
vicar hook. ,
Everyone, who knows Carolyn Wells'
humor will find the "Year Book" with
Us animated sodlacal cover worth
laughing over, and that Is what it is
for. , Incidentally, there are blank pages
for memoranda opposite the da tea. re
cording events -of the year as -they oc
cur. Nothing better In Its way than
this frankly labeled misinformation Is
to be had. The book fairly bubbles over
with merriment, all of the spontaneous
kind which has made Miss Wells' name
and fame. Among the delightful bits
,if verse, the "Rubatyat of Little Old
New York," which is headed by an ani
mated study by Miss Btuart, should not
be overlooked.
In this sketch a pertuVbed Puritan
father Is painfully endeavoring to keep
his balance upon a madly whirling
sphere, round which runs a busy metro
politan street. And the verse which
accompanies - it tells in words . which
Omar could never have penned, of the
delights of existence in little old

In the same vein Is the charming
