that the practice of taking summary
vengeance on peraons g-ullty of certain
. forms of crime Is increasing rather
than diminishing. The figures for the
12 months beginning January 1, 1908,
re larger than for several years past.
Though the most of the lynchings ec-
curred In the south, they were not con
fined to that section by any means.
Springfield, I1L, was the scene of the
Jrreatest race riot of the year, result
ng in the lynching of two negroes and
the killing and wounding of a number
if citlsens who participated in the riots
that lasted several days. Of the other
v northern states, one lynching is re
corded for Indiana, while California
'; furnished the only lynching In the far
Mississippi, Georgia and Texas, in
, the ordyr named, furnished the greatest
umbf lynching for the year.. A
quadrfiiKi'i3Rnfr m ' Kentucky in
creased t! figures in that state over
those of previous years.' The record of
Texas for 1908 was sixfold greater than
in 1907. In Arkansas and Louisiana;
there were fewer lynchings than in
' 1307. Oklahoma shows a clean slate.'
and so do Maryland, Missouri, Iowa and
Nebraska, in all of whicb states lynch
ings occurred in 1907.-
The lynchings for 1908 total 88. This
number is exclusive of several who met
