Across Continent Fruit Ship

. (Special Dlapatch to Tb Journal.)
Salem, Or.,. Dec. 18. Fruit-grower
' are ; Jubllknt over the announcement
. that a cooling; plant wlll.be erected to
handle the cherry- and berry crops of
1909. F. O. Deckebach, of the Salem
Ire works, announced at a meeting of
the fruitgrowers yasterdev, that his
company will erect a plant with about
a seven carload -capacity and have It
ready for operation this year. It will
be constructed in such a manner that
It can be enlarged to meet future needs.
The establishment of a cooling plant
will enable growers- to ship fresh fruit
across the continent safely. .
' The meeting of fruitgrowers was held
tinder tn numfe.e rtf the Marion (loun-
. ty Horticultural society. Horticultural
Commissioner W. K. Newell was the
principal speaker. His address dealt
almost entirely with marketing prob

I.ast evening another meeting of the
society .was held, at which -time Secre-
lurv ri. ai. Williamson ui ina buib
board fT horticulture delivered, an ad
dress upon the future of the apple In
dustry. In a very - exhaustive discus
sion Mr. Williamson . declared that
tnough- large additions are being made
to the apple producing area, tnere is
no danger of over production. . ' '
. TURN DOTO OFFER-
-' (Continued from Page One.)
" nature has provided natural power sites
and natural reservoir sites.
"On about one-tetith of this land tem
porary and crude systems of Irrigation
have been constructed that have result
ed In as much waste as profit. A very
unsatisfactory system of transportation
has been provided, and as a result
the resources of the valley hardly have
oeen touched.
'The development of the country by
a comprehensive system or irrigation
has been delayed by selfish interests,
but there are now signs that a spirit of
cooperation Is In the.- air. The govern
ment reclamation service has entered
upon the territory; haa planned a sys
tem that will water ana drain 330,000
acres of land and all that remains to
be done la for ua to get together and
work for the accomplishment of this
reclamation scheme.
Keen Interest la Project.
"It Is well known that the Malheur
project Is very attractive from a phy
sical and engineering standpoint; that
Its construction Is simple and easy, and
its cost very low. When first nresent-
ed to the people the project met with 1
obstacles that resulted In Its .feeing!
uroppeu temporarily, out or late the
change in public sentiment hasJieen
very marked. General interest 'in the
revival of the protect Is keanf Is In
deed marked by real enthusiasm and the
time has been considered opportune to
take the question up for the second
time and push it to a satisfactory con
clusion. "The belief has proved true, for no
sooner was the movement started than
general support was promised from
every district under the proposed ca
nals and communications to the federal
department resulted in the announce
ment that the project undoubtedly
would be revived if the owners of 80
per cent of the land would sign up for
the undertaking
"I wish we mla-hf heve h t.,.u,.
picturing to our minds the possibilities
of a perfect development of the re
sources of this valley. We would see
a farm home with electric light, power
and heat, all supplied at suefi low cost

WEATHER REPORT
The western high pressure area has
two crests, one of which Is central over
Idaho and the other over eastern Colo
rado. The coldest weather of the sea
son on the Pacific slope has resulted
rrom tMs high pressure area. Heavy
frosts occurred again this morning in
California as far south as Los Angeles
and a light frost is reported at San
Diego. At Pocatello, Idaiio, the temper
ature sunk to zero and In northern Ne
vada it was 2 below scro at 5 o'clock
this morning. The temperatures in
eastern Oregon are. nearly as low, and
sero weather also prevails in eastern
Colorado. A low pressure area Is cen
tral north of the Dakotan, and the tem
peratures are above the freezing point in
Alberta. A well defined storm Is cen
tral over the lower lake region, which
has caused moderately heavv rains in
the Ohio valley and middle Atlantio
states and moderately heavy snow in
Minnesota and the upper lake region.
The indications are for fair and con
tinued cold weather In this district to
night and Saturday. It will probably
be warmer in Portland Sunday.
