trade will scarcely admit of this price

Harder to Oct Dressed Teal.
Butchers are finding it much more
difficult to obtain what supplies of
dressed veal they need. Along Front

Prices are ruling stiff elbse to the top.
Ten cents is the general figure for se

coming slightly better, butwthe demand
Is still better than aupplies and the
market is firmer.

There is a great scarcity of cauli

Recent arrivals of oranges from the

- Cabbage market remains quite steady

Potatoes Quoted Mrmer.
Local potato market la quoted firmer
with the south still nibbling for sup

cisco has not advanced to a sufficient
height to admit or shipments m mat

generally elated over the better showing
of the trade and for that reason are not
offering so freely as a short time ago.
The tendency among onion growers
is to follow the lead of the potato men,
and they are now holding back the bulk
of their suppliea of keeping quality.

HOOD RIVER STILL '
LEADS WORLD'S MARKET
By J. W. Dennis, of W. Dennis & Sons
of Covent Garden market. London.
We have now seen the first arrival
of Oregon Newtowni on this market
and have to report, with much regret,
that the quality of the fruit Is inferior
to what.it has been In previous years.
It may be. however, that the earlier
arrivals are the greener fruit and that
considerably better quality and color
may be expected with subsequent ar
rivals. We sincerely hope "this may be
so, a the fruit we have seen does not
stana out sufficiently to command the
attention of the best trade.- There have
been on the market this week two or
three thousand boxes of Hood Rlveri
Newtowni, which were considerably I
iiner rruu inan that rrom your dis
trict, notwithstanding which, they were
sold by our neighbors at the low price
of from 9s to 12s per box. a price which
In our opinion, was too low, but which
has had the effect of attracting the
buyers away from the lower quality
Oregon fruit.
We are strongly of opinion that there
is nothing to be gained by forcing
sales, and we are therefore lying low
and refraining from pushing out the
stuff at a lower price than that which
we think it ought to command.' The
trade lor apples continues bad. Sup-
filies up to now have constantly been
n excess of the demand, and the mar
ket has never been clear. We cannot
think that this can last much longer.
Barrel apple stock, both InOntarlo and
America, Is in much anialler supply
than has been anticipated, whilst prices
in jsew jtoric ana otner American
towns are such that we do not think
It probable that much of that stock
will be seen on this -side of the water.
This will drive the trade on to the
boxed fruit and we. expect therefore
after the turn of the new year to see
box fruit in much better demand. At
present, California four tier fruit is
being sold from' 6s to 8s per- box, the
latter price being obtainable lor only
one marx wmcn is in limited supply,
the bulk feeing sold at from 6s fid to 7s.
rears are In very fair demand, one
particular variety of Cornice meeting
wun an excellent saie. we nave today
had a big lot of these Oregon Cornice
through our hands, and have sold at
prices ranging from 16s to 21s per half

Chicago. Defl. 18. The wheat trade
showed no disposition to do much busi

was only a small spread for the session

eroo news from home belts as well as

Portland tTnion Stockvards. Dec. 18.
The great strength shown in the live
stock market during the past few days
is continued today and all values are
held stiff.
One eneolal feature of the trade at
this time is the fart that while arrivals
are small in most lines, low grade stuff
Is neglected In some Instances to a con
siderable degree. While the market is
firm at yesterday's advance of cattle
of select quality, there is no rush at all
to nuy poor quality, cnoice holiday cat

bring the high values quoted at this
time. At this time of the year there Is
usually a lull In the demand for poor
quality, for .during the holidays the
trade ij always for the best that can
possibly be produced. i
Recent sale of choice steers at $4.65
In the yards has set the trade to talking
of the probable height to w-hioh prices
will soar when the time for advances
really materializes.
Trad Wants Bert Quality.
"There Is a very good demand for
select quality for the Christmas trade,"
says Lee M. iJicey of Hunt & Lacey to
day, "but I find less call for ordinary
and poor quality than formerly. AH
gooa sturr in being readily taken up
at the quotations listed, all lines being
arrecteo alike. The trade in sheep la
nowing no cnangea values, out at
former prices the market Is firmer."
"The market la verv firm for live
stock," says 8. P. Gould of the Gould
Commission company, "and top prices
are etui oDtainame for beat quality.
Firmness to Remain Benson.
"The firmness and high prices in the
cattle ana nog marxet will in all prob
ability remain," says Tom Benson of T.
C. Benson & Son. "While it may be pos
sible that owing to the holidays the
tone in hoga will not be so active -
that buyers will not purchase so freely
I hardly expect that lower prices will
rule. Most of th sheep now coming for
ward are of poor quality and for this
reason buyers are not wlllina- to mt
higher figures. The run of late has been
better, too.

While conditions of the general grain
market are quite firm there was no
change In values today either for- spot
or future deliveries. On the board of
trade, while considerable interest was
manifest In the market .quotations are
the same as yesterday for all three
grades.
. While a considerable amount of flour
Is now coming forward from the In
terior there is rittle doing In the local
market and the tons has taken on a
holiday character - throughout Of the
export trade there is nothing to say
except tferhaps that there is no export
trade at this time in the flour market.

is in tne city on nis annual trip, Mr.
Spencer was noncommittal upon the
oriental trade and according to latest
advices from both Japan and China
there is little hope of any great vol
ume of orders for our flour in the near
future.
Cables from the orient state that the
trade there has been filled to overflow
ing with flour previous to the last ad
vance. This great quantity of flour was
sent forward, it is stated, simply as a
speculative meant) re because there was
no business across the Pacific at any
time during the bast year to justify the
huge shipments of late.
The only business of Importance
which - really came on orders was the
big shipment now going forward to
Vladivostok.
The hay market Is firmer but prices
are as yet showing no change. Alfalfa
Is strongest of all because of the in
creasing demand for meal.

Ripley of Santa Fe Says
Nothing Doing Till Con
stitution Is Changed. 1
(United Press Leased Wire.) -Chicago,
Deo. 18. No more tracks
will be laid in Oklahoma by the Santa
Fe railroad, until the state constitution
is modified and no longer requires sep
arate incorporation of each line. This
was the ultimatum issued' today by
President Ripley of tha Santa Fe when
he made public a letter sent to the
Oklahoma Federation of Commercial
clubs. In this communication Ripley
ys: ; '
'This coirmanv had In contemplation
the building of several hundred miles
of railroad ip Oklahoma, which was
indefinitely postponed upon the adop
tion of your present state constitution
and will remain so postponed until that
constitution Is modified.
"We already have considerable mile
age In the state ,and If we build
branches we should - desire that they
be in fact branches of our present line,
but your constitution provides mat it
built thav must be chartered as sen'
arate ran roads under the laws of your
state, wmcn is entirely uui ul uib ur
tion. Your laws also provide that even
if a 20 or 80 mile branch Is built it
would have to be chartered as a sep
arate corporation, with general offices
and a full set of officers maintained
within the state, which is a -manifest
Absurdity.
"Oklahoma offers in certain sections
what would be quite an attractive field
for -railroad building If th restraint
of your constitution could be removed
and if the disposition on the part of
your state officers was to be fair
toward the railroads, but tinder exist
lng conditions it is auite impossible to
do anything."

LENTS DEMANDS
HEATED CARS
A complaint against the Portland
Railway, Light & Power company,
signed by Vard B. Swope, president of
the Lents Push club, has been file!
with the state railway commission re
questing the commissioners to bike such
action as necessary to compel the street
railway company to provide cars on the
Lents line with heating apparatus. Mr.
Swope says that the Mount Scott and
other citizens' associations are circulat
ing petitions requesting the company to
heat its suburban can.
The complaint states that aa a result
of the cold cars In Winter there Is much
sickness among the persons who have
been compelled to ride on them. It ie
claimed several other of the suburban
lines have heated cars. A hearing will
be had before the commission some time
In January.
The company recently Issue an an

the killing of Mrs. Morrison at Hasel

identification by the little daughter of
the murdered wpman, who was a wit;

He remained, unmoved to the last and
smiled v down on the husband of th
murdered woman among the spectators
as the . noose was being drawn over
his head. v - . ,
A Chinaman was ths third person
to expiate his crime on the scaffold.
Although he declared his innocence up

Hangman Radcllffe adjusted the noose.
There were about 150 people present
at the hanging and all the arrange

Owing to the fact that nearly all the

trial threatens to become long drawn

Thls morning the defense began the
Introduction of its testimony and placed
witnesses on the stand for the purpose
of weakening the testimony of the
state's witnesses. It Is claimed by the
defense that a part of the evidence given
by the witnesses for the prosecution at
the trial Is substantially different from
