It was decided to circulate a petition
Among the taxpayers, of the county to
secure the names of all those who were
in favor of a IVi mill tax to cover the
expenses of buyine land and buildings
for th experiment station. Mr. Blalock
suggested that those signing the peti
tion should set opposite their names
the amount of property on which they
were paying taxes, which would show
bow many were interested in the move
ment. Another important question discussed
was the rebate on grain bags. It was
decided to circulate a petition among
the ranchers, to be sent to the congress
man of this district, ask In him to
work for the reduction of c"uty on
sacks. It is estimated that the past
year the farmers of this county paid out
120,000 more than necessary on grain

MOST RECENT STRIKE IN .
FLORENCE IMMENSELY RICH
A strike that promises to rival the
phenomenal production of the famous
Engineers' lease, which earned nearly
$600,090 in dividends in three months,
was made a few days ago in the lease
block adjoining, formerly known aa the
Daisy Florence, but now held and oper
ated by the Mitchell-Fairfield Develop
ment company. The find was made last
Sunday In an upraise from the 315 foot
level. Four Inches of quartz assays
$461.60 a ton -and four inches of talc
lying parallel to it assays $437.80 a ton.
Between the quarti and the talc lies a
narrow streak of ore that ia half gold,
making the average value for the -nine
Inches something .sensational. If the
find holds out the record of the En
gineers' will easily be duplicated and
possibly exceeded.
A strange freak of fortune in connec
tion with this discovery Is the fact that
the picture streak was found within six
inches of wherp the former owners of
the lease stopped work after spending
upward of $100,000 in a vain endeavor
to locate the treasure. The Daisy Flor
ence was controlled by Campbell, David
son & Co. of Chicago. They sunk a
shaft 315 feet and did a vast amount of
lateral work and while good assays were
frequently obtained they could not lo
cate an ore body. The company finally
exhausted its treasury and the lease
finally passed Into the hands of the
Mitchell-Fairfield Development company,
the consideration being $900 and per
cent of the net earnings for the Daisy
Florence shareholders.
Crosscuts had been driven to the
north and south on the $15 foot level,
the former being out 80 feet from the
shaft and the latter about 20 feet. It
was in this south crosscut that Foreman
Koster discovered a knife blade of al
most pure gold last Sunday. He de
cided to follow this seam and the first
round of shots uncovered the bonanza.
In addition to the nine inches of very
rich etuff there ia considerable rood
rock on both sides and the ore as Tt is
being broken down runa better than $200
a ton.
