FEAST OF VIRGIN
OF GUADALUPE
Commemorating Vision of a
Toor Indian", and Its
Fulfillment.
(United lr Les-d Wire.)
City of Mexico, Dec. 16. For the
375th lime the foast of the Virgin of
Guadalupe, the greatest festival in the
Mexican religious caienuar. was cele
brated In the capital today. Pious pil
grims to a total of nearly 60,000 came
to the city from all parts of the repub
lic to pav homage at the shrine In the
famous church at 'he villa de Guada
lupe, just outsioe tne city. Since the
passage of the reform laws, making
the absolute separation of church and
state In Mexico, the president and the
government officials no longer take any
part In the celebration, but Its observ
ance Is none the less enthusiastic on the
part of the populace.
According to tradition. It was in
15S1. ten years after the conquest of
Mexico by the Spaniards, that the Vir
gin Mary appeared to an Indian on the
spot where the famous church now
stands and commanded him to build an
edifice to her honor on the site. This
Indian was Juan Diego. It was on De
cember 1) that ha received his commis
sion, which , be proved to the bishop
by showing him nls blanket, on which
had - been, miraculously imprinted an
Image of the Virgin. :
This blanket, bearing the' miraculous
Image. Is still preserved in the church
of Guadalupe. Monevr-amt eoatlv lew-
els aggregating In value several . mil
lions of dollars have been given fur
its adornment, and it now lies In a
frame of solid gold, covered , with a
crystal plate, above the altar of the
church which was erected by command
of -the virgin. On each side of the
Image, within the golden frame, are
strips of gold in which glitter and
flash myriad diamonds, emeralds, pearls
and other precious stones.
