At tha last city election the people
decided, at the polls, that they wanted
a dry town. 'and since that time very
little liquor has been sold. Once or
twice the "blind pigs" have attempted
to peddle out the thirst erasers from
back rooms, but so far as Is known,
they have all been apprehended before
they had gone far.
The fight has been tsken up In earn
est recently by the saloon Interests, who
discovered that in the city charter there
Is a clause very similar .10 we meqiora

face of a heavy dry vote victory. The
Medford case was carried up to the
i.nm fonrt and the charter was sus
tained .'and saloons were permitted , to

the supreme caurt three petitions for
saloon licenses were handed in 'to the
St. Johns city council, - which has held
back Its answer for about two months,
settling the question last night by a
vote of 6 to, 2 in favor of licensing sa

The ordinance provides that there
shall be but one saloon to every 1200
people and that tnere snail ne no music,
free . lunch or women In the establish
ments, v No saloon shall occupy more
than one room, and nothing but liquor
