of the latter body, and the residents
of East Portland ftenerally, that a cltv
crematory be located near the mouth
of the Willamette river, far enough
down that the north winds will not
make It offensive to the city. Barges
covered with galvanised Iron would be
used to curry the waste down the river
and the city would collect the garbage
three times a week at a cost of obout
26 cents a month -to householders.
Resolutions to this effect were adopt
ed and will be presented to the east
side clubs for Indorsement and then
referred to the city council. Joseph
Supple estimates hat 2a barges for cre
matory use could be purchased for 150.

for the New theatre, the flrat playhouse
ever erected in America for other' than
commercial purposes, was laid today
with Interesting ceremonies. The occa
sion was made notable bv addresses hy
Mayor. McClellan and others of promi
nence. The musical portions of the
program were furnished frr the forces
of the Metropolitan opera. .The event
attracted a large crowd of spectators
to the corner of nixty-secona street and
Central Park west, where the playhouse
Is being erected.
The New theatre la designed to be a
model playhouse, to be operated on a
plan akin to the subsidy system of
Europe for the advancement of the art
of acting and of the proper presentation
of the best plays. The project is backed
by half a hundred of the nation's leadf
ing millionaires. They will receive rt

between Sixty-second and Sixty-third
streets, opposite the wast side of Cen
tral Park. It will be a very handsome
structure of the French renaissance
style of architecture and built of gray
sandstone. The auditorium will seat 2318
?ersons, 600 of whom will be placed in
he orohestra. The boxes will be in
two tiers, two boxes being reserved for
tha directors and the artists. The stage
Itself wUl be the finest In the world
and -will be equipped with every appli
ance known to modern builders. The
40 dressing rooms will be reached by

Every provision will be made for tha
comfort and safety of the patrons. The
exits will "be so arranged that the house
can be emptied' in about two minutes,

dred of -the leading architects of Amer
ica, members'cf the American Institute
of Architects, met today, the occasion
belr.g the annual convention of the or
ganization. The sessions wilt - last
through Thursday.' . with President
Charles Gilbert presiding.
The special topic chosen for consider
ation at the meeting this year is "The1
Relation of the National Government
to Art." Addresses will be delivered
by Becretary of the Interior James R.
Garfield, President Nicholas Murray
Butler of Columbia university. Senator
Francis Newlands of Nevada, Com
missioner, of Indian Affairs Francis
B. . Leupp, and Henry M. - Prltch
ett president of the Carnegie Educa
tional Trust. Each of the speakers la
expected to take a different branch
of the subject and discuss it from his
own point of view. After the discus
sion ths Institute probably Will formu
late a resolution to be nrni. in
