DEATH FROM
POISONED
OYSTERS
Of Party of Thre, Two Are
Dead and One. Has Ty
phoid Fever-Others Suf
fer From Eating Infect
ed Bivalves.
(Hearst Newi bj Longest Leased Wire.)
New York, Dec. 12. Of a merry, party
of three who had an oyster luncheon
In the stag room of a fashionable up
town hotel, the day after election, two
are dead and one is still 111 from ty
phoid fever.
Of another party of three . who
lunched in the same place, the same
day, also partaking; of oysters, all are
suffering: front typhoid fever and the
physicians who have been In charge of
the cases believe the men have been af
fect od by the bivalves they ate.
The latest death in the first party
was that on Friday night of J. B. Row
land of the Rowland Advertising' com
, pany of this city. The other one of
the party who died was A. B. Elliott
of the Witherbee Igniter company. The
third member, now convalescent in
Toledo, Ohio, Is Herbert Lytle, the au
tomobile driver.
, The members of the second pariy
are Thomas Wetsol, the agent of tho
l.lpe Gear company; Otto Hein, of the
Bosch Magneto company, and L. A.
Hopkins, former manager of the Amer
ican company. These three have been
suffering from typhoid fever, but are
now Improving.
With the eception of Mr. Rowland
and Mr. Elliott, those stricken w.re au
tomobile men. A coterie of these, in
cluding the two named, termed them
selves the Flat Tire club, and they had
a certain table in the stag room where
they dropped In for lunch. It was at
this table that the three among whom
the deaths occurred sat.
All three partook of the oysters on
the day following election. A week
later to a 3ay all three came down with
typhoid fever. Mr. Elliott had the most
serious case and. without rallying, he
sank rapidly -and died two weeks ago.
Two weeks ago Mr. Rowland began to
rally, but pneumonia set In and he died
Friday night at his home.
Mr. Rowland's physician said tonigh:
he had found it Impossible to trace the
infection to any other source than tho
oysters.
Mr. Rowland had been In the adver
tising business In New York about five
vears. H had been married about eight
years r left a widow. He was 31
years o .ge.
Shortly after Mr. Rowland and his
friends had become victims of the
fever, a western automobile man came
to Now York. As usual with western
men. his first thought was for some
good oysters.
The story goes that he went to a
hotel and ate a portion of oysters. The
same afternoon he heard about the condition-
of the automobile men who had
eaten oysters, and he became so fright
ened that for a couple of days friends
guarded him, fearing that he might do
harm to himself.

Nearly every time the postman
makes a delivery to The Journal
Office he has a big bundle of let
ters for the classified advertisers.
When you want to buy or sell,
when you want an employe, or when
you want a position, you can adver
tise without having it known all over
town. You can have the answers to
your advertisement delivered to The
Journal office, and nobody will know
who is advertising until you want to
let them know.
You'd be surprised to know how
many people avail themselves of the
conveniences of The Journal office.
Last week, a widow, quite prominent
in social circles, decided that she want
ed to rent one of the rooms in her spa
cious house. Of course, she didn't
want the whole town to know that she
was taking in boarders. She placed a
little WANT AD in THE JOURNAL,
and had the people who wanted that
kind of a room scud their letters in care
pf THE JOURNAL office. She called,
received the letters and answered the
ones that looked right to her. Today
she has a boarder, and her nieghbors
don't even know that she advertised.
