Because of this conflicting situation
and tn order that Mr. McArthur might
have an opportunity lo state his po
sition clearly to the people as regards
his belief that pledges should be kept
or broken. The Journal on November 13
addressed the following letter to him:
"Dear Sir In view of the fact that
you are a candidate for speaker of the
house of representatives in the Oregon
legislature and the further fact that
If . elected speaker you will be in a
position,, to exert a considerable Influ
ence upon the election of United States
senator. The Journal desires t6 ask
you the following questions:
