made the promise, and effect some com
promise, no member of the legislature
who has taken Statement No. 1 can do
this thing. He does not know the men
who voted for v him because of this
pledge. He cannot go to them. They,
presumably. Voted for him because they
believed in the principle which he rep
resented. The legislator has no right to
go to other men than those with whom
he made this agreement to seek release.
He is pledged to the men who elected
him to carry out bis promise and the
only way for him to be relieved of that
promise is to be relieved by every one
Of the individuals who bound him to it
by their votes. He cannot set that re
lease. T- .

the state. They are nice fellows per
sonally, thev are useful to the old ma
chine politicians because they are of
agreeable personality, but they are not
tne builders or tne state.

not believe that any, of the legislators
are going to violate their pledges. I be
lieve we have elected better men to the
legislature than that and because I be
lieve this, I nave connaenoe that the
senatorial question will be settled by
the first ballot, and in the way which
the people of the state directed by their
