f ' tjto Ontaids Demand for Potatoes.
i The market for potatoes Is stagnant
as tar as any outside demand is no
- 'ticeable. No supplies can be shipped to
San Francisco because of the low prices
there and shipments to Arizona and
Texas are out of the question because
, of the very low figures California grow
ers are still willing to let bo at The
local demand for potatoes 1b quite fa"1,
but most of the trade is at this time
being supplied by growers direct from
wagons to tlie retail grocers and for
that reason there is only a nominal
(movement along Front street
Holding Onion Market steady.
The market for .onions Is being held
tn firm hv the a-rowers and
' Crnnt street values are unchanged from
ni-vinim fieures. Efforts of some
houses to break the local market By
importing supplies from California have
" failed although the Imported stock has
had the effect of keeping local values
from climbing higher.- Without the re
cent Importations from the south there
would not have been a sufficient amount
of home grown onions offered to fill the
requirements or tne traae.
. . , rill December Bop Contracts.
Now that Thanksgiving is over, the
.op trade has begun to awaken and sev
eral sales have been reported around
previous figures. It Is stated that a
number of short .eontraets for December
tk-llvery" are now being filled. Plncus
of Taeoma Is still holding; off his pur
chases and it is stated that outside of
the settlements he recently made In
cash he still believes that lower prices
will prevail. Hops of quality nre. get
f ting very scarce, but there is still plen
ty of ordinary goods offering around
former values. Efforts to booBt the
market have failed. Just as did the ones
to pull prices still lower. The New
York Producers' Price Current gives the
following view of the hop market in its
latest issue:
"The market in New Tork state the
past week has been somewhat quieter
' with a consequent easing off of prices,
r Transactions have been limited to small
lots here and there. Range of prices re
'. norted are from lie to l!V4c to grower.
Jocally an uninteresting market con
tinues. No buying; of any importance
Is reported. Business with brewers con
tinues very slow. Reports from Ger
many are of a slightly better feeling
over there on best goods, rouowtng tne
decline of last week. English markets
are quiet, with large offerings of low
rrade, hops."

According to estimates 'thera are
stored in Portland ice houses at this
time about two tons of turkeys that
were unsold in the retail shops for
Thanksgiving and were put away for
Christmas trade. With the birds averag
ing 12 pounds each it is estimated that
just about 1,000 birds were put away
owing to the luck of purchasers.
While much the larger per cent of the
turkeys rushed Into storage bv the dis
appointed retailers were of poor quality
--thin or badly dressed stock quite a
number of birds put away were of
prime stock. .
Turkeys continue to come to the
Front street markets and there is no
demand at this time. No prices are

mai me nest birds will sell below 20;

There Is a slightly easier tone In the
local wheat market, with some buyers
offering; a decline of lc a bushel from
former quotations. The volume of buy
ing Is email, except at one or two places,
and there quite fair sized purchases
have been reported. With a mixed tone
in other world's markets today local
buyers were not inclined to venture one
way or the other in a decided manner.
Some report purchases of small lots of
club around 89c basis, track delivery
here, but some that are not buying say
the market still remains at 90c.
f oreigners are disposed to hold their
hands off the market for the time being
and today's quotations for futures at
Liverpool and Antwerp are lower.
Un the Portland board of trade todav
there was a slightly firmer tone in oats
for prompt shipment and a sale of 500
tons of No. 1 white was made at J31.75,
which is 25c above previous values. For
oats or wneat rutures there was no
change on the board of trade during the
uay a session, tne market reflecting a
holjday character.
There was an easier tone in the bids
for barley futures on the board of trade
today, with a fractional decline in val
ues. During the day 300 tons of bar

PEMOLETON WHEAT AT

(Special Dispatch to Tb4 Joarnl.
Pendleton, Or., Nov. 27. Wheat in
Pendleton yesterday reached 77 cents,
til? highest price quoted since early In
the season, and as a result several
crops were disposed of by Umatilla
county growers at that price.
Aitnougn tne rirst quotation received
by local Duyers were at a considerable
less' price, the grain advanced during
the day, and when 77 cents wa reached
the offer was accepted by several far
mers, who disposed of whole or parts of
crops. Acordlng to the buyers, however,
tht-re are still growers who are waiting
a return 01 u cents, a price wrncti was
offered early in the season. The price
of 77 cents was paid for wheat of first
class quality yesterday, and it Is said
that considerable or the grain unsold
in the county as yet will scarcely come
up to the standard which brought that
price.
Early In the present season SO cents

farmers held for a return which they
were confident would follow long be

disappointed and during the last few

weaker feellna In the Portland vards.
Today hogs are selling from 10c to 16c
lower ror pest Blurr put ordinary stock
Is almost 25c lower than a few day
ago. Arrivals of hogs continue quite
liberal and the taking by killers have
not kept pace with the Inward move

more discriminating in their purchases
and to secure the top prices hogs must
come up to tne scratch.
