audience. Mr. Knapp was Introduced by

Mr. Knapp is one of the lecturers

intellectual pastime, touching only the
emotions and sentiments of men, it
could never emulate the mercy of prim
ltlve Christian healing. It is generally
admitted that It heals the sick, bringing
peace and comfort from the nature of
its curative power. Indeed it has chal
lenged our attention, not because of
any failure, but because of its succeess
tn good works. Far from being an eth
leal philosophy, this Is a life to be
lived a truth to be proved.
"The observation that disease is men
tal has aroused the frequent remark,
"Well, if pain la all in the thinking,
lust think you are well and you will
be so." . Now, the same Ignorant belief
that causes disease can never cure it;
for, if thinking you are well is all that
is necessary, ana it could be so er
ranged at 12 o'clock tonight to have
everybody think they are well, then all
tne pain ana suffering or the world
would e wiped out in a single night,
But the most masterful logic of mate
rial pnnosopny .can never convince I
suffering man that hl pain Is not real
for the same mind that produces disease
can never destroy it.

"Before Mrs. Eddy discovered Chris
tian Science, she had been searching for
years along this line of mental causa
tion. She had been studying homeo
pathy and learned the mental nature of
disease, and that the higher attenuations
of medicine which contained the least
of the drug and the most mind were the
most powerful. She continued her liy
vestlgations beyond homeopathy to a
mental standpoint, with the question
ever before her, whether matter or mind
heals the sick.
Mrs. Eddy' Instant Cure.
"It was at this period of her experi
ence that the great spiritual light
dawned upon her consciousness, and
found her waiting and prepared to re
ceive the message. The circumstance
which brought this spiritual awakening
ana mereDy estaonsned ner conclusions
was her remarkable recovery, In the
year 1886. from an injury caused by an
accident. She was seeking to console
ner surrerlng sense by reading passages
from the Scriptures, when she caught
the depth of Its spiritual Import and
was lnstantlv healed. Tills was thn vln
dlcatton of her long soarch. for it was
the spirit that quickened and she
anew it.
Now that Mrs. Ertilv had found the
comforter, which is the 'spirit of truth,'
nd which heals the slrk. she resumed
her search of the Scriptures for a scien
tific explanantlon of It. that she might
impart it to others. She soon learned
that the healing operates according to
a aivine jaw. and she began to write
out her observations. These writings
formed the basis of her more complete
work known as 'Science and Health
With Key to the Scriptures,' which was
first published in 1875."

'In many minds there, has been cre
ated an uneasy impression that the crit
ical studv of the gospel narratives has
reduced the history of our Lord's life
upon earth to an uncertainty upon
which we cannot ouild; but we can be
fully assured that the fierce fire of
modern criticism has only made it
plainer that we have In the gospels a
definite and convincing picture of a
unique personality. The Bible amply
suffices to Introduce to men and women
the living friend whom they learn to

"Christianity Is not a 'system,' a

thing of the emotions, but essentially
of the will, and therefore the church

Dr. Brougher Declares Waltz Tends
to Impurity.
The waltr Is one of the chief causes
of the breaking of the seventh com

night by Rev. J. Whltcomb Brougher
in hir address at the White Temple are
to be taken as authoritative. Taking
as his subject, "Broken Marriage Vows,
Dr. Brougher tootc occasion 10 msie a
few sensational remarks concerning
dancing. If the doctor Is to be believed,
men do not dance because of love of
music or of art as expressed in rhyth
mic motion, but because the walte has
the devil in It and because they are
actuated by vile passions. Dr. Brough-

"Th modern waltz, with Its so-called
full-dress costume for women, I believe
to be another prolific source or impur
ity. Men do not dance with men only.
Women do not usually dance with each
other, although they will, If they can
not get a man, but men newr dance
without a woman. The round dance and
the decollette dress are suggestive. The
music does not take the devil out of It.
"Low wages, combined with the temp
tations of difficult clrcurcwtances In
life, frequently lead to a violation of
this commandment. I , homor every

young women have come to feci there

OH BiHGE CUT
William Slusher Declares
Department Seeks to
Injure Sheepmen.
'(Special IMipatch to Tb Journal.)
Pendleton, Or., Nov. 23. Another cut
in the number of sheep allowed upon
the Wenaha forest reserve for grazing
during the season of 1909 has Just beere
announced by J. M. Schmlta, supervisor.
The reduction amounts to about 8 per
cent of the number gVased -last year.
The cut falls heaviest upon the own
ers of the largest flocks, all permits for
over i. 000 sheep being reduced 20 per
cent. Holders of permits for smaller
amounts than 2.000 hea will be allowed
the same number as last year. This ar
rangement Is made to afford better op
portunities for the smaller sheepmen.
The official notice for the cut, which
is given herewith, was received with
disgust by the bl woolgrowers, most of
whom feel that the reduction was abso

that the forest service is trying to put
us out of business," declared William
Slusher when asked about the ruling.
"They are driving us out of business.
Why, within the last three years they
have cut the number of head I am al
lowed to run down 40 per cent. It
looks as though we would have to do
something; else.
"In the first place they made a 20
per cent reduction. Last year they cut
that 12. per cent, and this year they an
nounce' that we can have 8 per cent
less than last year.
"The reason they give us is that the
range won't stand pasturing with the
number of stock that were grased last
year. .
Wo Season for Action.
"I have been in the business, long
enough to know something about the
range and what it will stand, and I
never have known It to be in any bet
ter condition than it waa this fall. I
certainly can't see any real reason for
any reduction, and neither can any other
sheepman who runs sheep up in the
Wenaha range. Just such rulings as
this caused the criticism of the for
