require heroic eradicativ measures.
The entire campaign ha been under
the direction of tn united States pub

of which General Walter Wyman is the
head. Th state board of health de
serves the very- greatest praise for its
cooperation In this campaign. In San
Francisco the city government and the
city board of health did splendid work
with the assistance of the cltlsens'
health committee, which was organized
for the apeclflo purpose of educating
the people and combating the disease.
The city of Oakland also did good work.
It ha long been recognised that the
federal health service was best fitted
for handling problems of thl kind, and
this campaign ha simply demonstrated
again that It Is not only safe, but'
necessary, to delegate this work to the
United States public health and marine
hospital service r

discussion ha arlsea over th plague
condition on th coast that a special
correspondent of this paper on the
coast caned upon" Dr. Rupert Bfue,
quarantine officer at San Francisco, to
see what the fact were. Dr. Blue
gave some astonishing figure , which
show that th condition 1. not nearly
so serious a has been generally sup
uosed. -.
He states that in San Francisso not
a case of the plague among human be
ings has occurred since January 80,
1908. ' From May, 1907, to January 30,
1908, ISO human cases were reported
with 77 deaths.
Aprpoximately 400 plague rats have
been found. These were very numer
ous until March, 1908. There was one
infected rat in April, one in May, one
in June and one on July 28. From
that time until October 21 no infected
rat were found. On Infected rat was
found on October 21 and one on Oc
tober 23, 19S8. The rat found in
April, May, June and July all came
from one place.. The two rats found
In October were taken about one and
one half block from this focus, so that
it may be said that ther has only
been one focus of plague In San Fran
cisco since last April.
Th city of San Francisco ha under
gone a very thorough cleaning at the
hands of the United States public
health and marine hospital service and
was never in such a cleanly condition
as at 'present. Th work is still be
ing carried forward, the United States
government spending about 820.000 per
month.
There were 13 human case, with
eiht deaths, in Oakland. Active meas
ures are being taken. in Los Angeles by

THE REAL

This Is the

Some Specialists announce that they
cure all Disorders, including those of
the lungs, liver, heart, stomach, bow
