By John E. Lathrop..
( Washington, Nov. 21. The past
24 hours have wrought an entire
change In the feeling' of confidence
existing among the visiting lumber
men, who had all thought it assured
that the lumber duty would not be
changed this winter or next summer.
Tonight nearly every lumberman ad
, mils the chances are that either the
duty will be removed or , a terrific
fight -will ensue between Speaker
Cannon and the Incoming as well as
the present administration.
"The administration la pledged to
" the removal of the inmber-duty,"
Bald one lumberman; "this ' be
lieve beyond question." ;
Proof was offered in the visit of
Forester Pinchot to the meeting of
lumbermen, where he stated frankly
that so far as he had gone Into the
aubJecV he. favored the , removal or,
material reduction of the . lumber
fluty. 'rr:- vp:,' ;;.
"The whole, plan reata on the ne
cessity for. the conservation of our
forests." Pinchot told the lumber
men. "If a better plan can be
evolved, then I am for that plan, but
the present consumption Is .three
times aa much as we grow' annually
and It means the entire destruction ,
of , our forests ? hence we must do
something to save the situation.. The
free entry of Canadian lumber might
relieve the situation; if so, then we
should remove the duty." - -
I have seen many telegrams sent
home by lumbermen viBitlng here
saying, as In one Instance:
' '.There Is absolutely no hope of
an Increase of the, duty. , We -will
do well if we save any of the pres
ent tariff." '
The change In the situation Is due
to no voiunxary aci on vuw jmn. u
the .majority membership of the
ways and means committee, but
arises-la the report that Taft has
decided to oppose Cannon for re
election because the latter, and . his
close friends, it is feared, have de
termined to carry through a fake
plan for the revision of the tariff.
This report, from Hot Springs, Va.,
wrought a remarkable change in the
attitude of Chairman Payne and his
supporters. ,
.Already the lumbermen are lay--Ing
plans to carry on the fight all
winter for defeating the removal or;
reduction of the tariff It possible.
Facta developed during the lum
ber agitation today indicate a Bar
aga contest between the Taft and
the Cannon-Aldrich forces unless a
compromise is patched . up soon. It
Is noticeable that already a ma
jority of the lumber representatives
here are aligning in aupport of Can
non, anticipating his fight, against
the revision forces, which mean to
thoroughly rearrange the schedules.

Goodwin's spirit was one of defiance

constable was called off. . . ,
