The famous Maud Powell trio will ba

To make it doubly attractive travel
ing by the water route on ' the upper
Willamette, the Oregon City Transpor
tation company, , which operates the
steamers Pomona and Oregona between
here and Corvallls, .put into effect 'to
day a fare card slashing its old rates
practically in bait to all places along'
the line, excepting Newberg, to' which
place It is reuueed from 60 cents to 36.
The new list Is said to give the cheap
est passenger fare that has ever been
enjoyed between here and Salem. In
addition to this and as a further Induce
ment for the traveling public to patron
ize the steamers, the price of the sump
tuous meals served on the boats has
been reduced from 60 to 85 cents, al
though Captain Graham, manager of
tne company, says Uiey win De main
tained at the same high standard as
before the big rate cut
A peculiar coincident was the fact
that the new fare card was made ef
fective today with the resumption of
river traffic between Portland and Cor
vallls this morning. The Pomona,
which left Taylor street dock at :45
this morning, had been unable to get
farther than Salem for several weeks
because of th -low water in the upper
stretches of the Willamette, but the
heavy rains of this week brought a good
boating stage and today she ' will go
through to the old terminal of the line.
The new tariff was Introduced largely
to meet competition from the Salem
electric railroad, which has cut Into the
nnssencer business." and bv (riving a
liberal reduction the Bteamboat companyJ
expects to hold ftriost of the old patron
age as well as capture considerable new
business, basing this on the hope that
the cheaper rates will Induce a greater
amount of traveling.
"We have decided to give the people
the cheapest transportation ever in effect
between this cltv and points on the up
per Willamette, ' said Captain Graham
this morning, "and to make the trip still
more attractive 60-cent meals will be
35 cents. . The fare from
Portland-Ban Francisco ' route thereby
increasing the fleet to h4f a dosen ves
sels, each with a carrying capacity of
not less t nan eoo tons. , -: , ..
- The latest addition is lh steam
schooner - Carmel, which according to
advices received this morning will leave
Ban Francisco next -Wednesday. The
Carmel wU come north with practically
a full cargo. ' Going south she will take
grain ana lumoer.

be, seen, the two lines represent no few
er than nine steam schooners operating
between this port and Ban F rancisco.

The Biggest Lies
Ever printed are those now running In
some of the dally newspapers declaring
whisker a remedy for disease, and that
people have been cured by its use.
There Is poison in nearly every drug,
and nearly all drugs are harmful to the
health, but the king of crimes of all is
that of publishing to the world that
whisky any brand of whiskey cures
disease or nrolong-R life. It Is an as
sassinator of both body and soul. It Is
a breeder of disease. It is the abettor
of death. It and its makers are the
monumental criminals of the age!

Is it worth considering? Do you de
sire health? Have you abused your con
stitution? Have you neglected treat
ment until now it Is forced upon ye?
Then have some sense. God gave you
brains for a purpose. He did not put
them within your skull for you to bot
tle them up and drive the cork home
with a mallet. They were given you to
think with.
THE S USE THOSE BEAUTS!
The man who concocts the "dope" sold
you as "medicine" cares no more about
your welfare than you care for the
guttersnipes of London. It Is vour
monev he is after. Il ta the coin of the
realm that Interests him most, and you,
sick brother or sick sister, have been
selected for his victim. Tou must "pay
the price," or be forsaken.
