The two Christian Science churches ofl
this city, Jointly, bring some one mem
ber of the Christian Science board of
lectureship of Boston, Mass., to Port
land, twice a year to lecture. The Inquiring-
public is privileged to hear
these lectures without cost, and they
are given for the reason that an au
thoritative statement as to what Chris
tian Science really Is and stands for,
seems to be a need, because of the
many wrong statements that are con
stantly coming to the surface. Bliss
Knapp of Boston, Mass., an accredited
member of the Christian Science board
of lectureship will deliver one of these
lectures at the Helllg- theatre on the
afternoon of November 22,

'98 VETERANS PLAN
MINSTREL BENEFIT
Among the most enthuslastlo mem
bers of the Spanish War Veterans' Min
strel company, now rehearsing for the
big minstrel show benefit, is Beneca
Fouts, commander of the local Scout
Young camp. Mr, Fouts will be seen
as an end man, and many of his friends
who listened to his able defense in the
Martin trial will, no doubt, be surprised
to learn that as a minstrel man and
comedian, he is above the average.
Jay H. Upton is another one of Port
land's young lawyers who is working
for the success of the war veterans
benefit, which will be. given at the
Helllg, December 14 and 15. Mr. Upton
will occupy the important seat in the
show of interlocutor. A. better lot of
well-known talent is seldom seen in a
local production. A fine augmented or
chestra will also add greatly to the con
certed numbers in the performance.
- There will be a full rehearsal of the
big first part tomorrow evening at the
theatrical mechanics' hall, Yamhill, and
Third streets, when a try-out perform
ance will be given. Some very novel
and attractive features will be Intro
duced in the "olio."

"It affords me nlMmira tn

that I am much better prepared to cor
rect bad cases of impaired vision than
I was before I took a course in the
hospitals of Europe," said R. A. Thomp
son, the optician, when seen In his of
fices on the second floor of the new
Corbett building, at Morrison and Fifth
streets.
R. A. Thompson was in business for
years in the Young Men's Christian As
sociation building after which he spent
some time in Europe. Since his return
he has been accorded the most flatter
ing attention. Some idea of the success
he met with can be appreciated by read
ing the credentials he has received from
other lands which appear on an outside
page of today's Journal. These are said
ty be the strongest indorsements that
any optician can have.
"The number of cases of impaired
vision is probably not so large in this
section of the union as In the eastern
states or in European countries," con
tinued Mr. Thompson. "In the densely
fiopulated centers where more artificial
lght is used, one would naturally expeot
to find more eye troubles. The one
thing for which the people may feel
grateful is that scientific research has
Drovided more suitable remedies and
means for correcting the troubles of the
eye than were obtainable heretofore.
The advancement has been especially
noticeable In the big cities of Europe,
where the great specialists live. After
I learned what they have for the ln
