cers that Reed smuggled the nuggets,
generally flat ones, from -.the claims in
his shoe or mouth. - He - worked this
game for a year. Reed said, then left
Fairbanks for Nome, coming aouth to
Beame aoout October I. The orricers
have secured $2,200. They believe the
remainder of the alleged stealings was
sold to banks..

CHILD IS ALLEGED

That the father and stepmother of
Ester Lewis, a 14-year-old girl, who
lives In Sellwood, are trying to have
her sent to 'an Insane asylum in order
to gain possession of property that she
owns In New York. Is the charge made
by a neighbor of the family In Sellwood.
Charges that the child has been cruelly
treated will be heard in the juvenile
court this afternoon.
It appears that the girl Is not ex
ceptionally bright, but the neighbors
say she is not insane. She has been
living with her father and stepmother
at 626 Clackamas avenue, Sellwood. The
court records do not show 'that any
formal steps have been taken to have
the girl committed to an asylum, . ..

that the Williams girl who was fast
becoming notorious, prior to her present
escapade, was scheming to blackmal'
Connelly. The girl has been in . La
Grande for 'Some time.. She lived with
her relatives until a month ago j when
thejf moved tar Elgin. The relatives
made every effort to shield the girl
and keep her out of trouble,, but it
was no use. She has been known to
approach men on numerous occasions.
The girl -worked in a laundry-for a
. time, then In a hotel, and lastly in a
Chinese restaurant. The proprietor of
the restaurant discharged her because
she had a bad reputation.
About three weeke ago Gertrude Wil
liams' locked herself in a room, at the
Blue Mountain hotel. She had a loaded
revolver and made threats of taking
her own life. Sheriff Chllders was
called and entered the room, took the
s-un away from her and talked to the
girl, who told the usual hard luck story.
ChtMers went before the charitable or
ganization of women, reported the case
and asked them to find a place for her.
The next day she was offered a place
In the home of a farmer near the city.
- but declined to go. She said a friend
was golnjr to give her money and send
her . to Portland. The friend was a
brakeman on the O.' R. A N.
' The relatives In Elgin wrote her par
ents regarding the conduct of the gtrl.

send her to- the girl s home.
Seemingly she heard of the plan and
left with Connelly. Common report has
it -that Connelly kept her In his rooms
here prior to their departure. The girl
has -the habit of telling that she has
no home and no friends and Is discour
aged and ready to go to the devil. She
can cry at any time in any place.
