which arrived up In the harbor last
night, was 18 days making the run from
. Honolulu to the Columbia, her perform
ance being a strong contrast to that of
the training ship. But it was not be
cause the Marechal Noalllea is not a
good sailor; the winds were against her
antj for days, a Stretch: in destruct
ive gale, the big windjammer simply
drifted- back over her track, for hun
dreds Of miles. Then after .ding out
the storm she fell into a calm that held
her almoat in one position for three
day a But the last few days of th
voyage brought good sailing and . the
. bark showed what could be dons under

Arthur Fltger left Portland In ballast
for Paget sound . to load lumber lor
Europe. Fire broke out in tne cararu
while the vessel was loading and eveot-
-ually the charrerf craft was sold to a
'company In British Columbia and con
verted into a barge. v
' ; 1 Yesterday sfternoon the barpte, re
named the Quatslno, returned to this
port with a cargo of S.ooo tons of coal
from Nanalmo. The coal Is being die
charged at Alaska dock and tha barge is
attracting much attention because of its
large dimension The cargo Is con
signed to Frank Waterhouse A: Co.
The Quatslno is In command of Cap
tain Blstrom. She wss seven days in
tow from" Nanalmo to the Columbia river
and put Into Neah4ay one day to capo
a heavy storm that was raging at the
entrance to tha straits.

Concert This Evening for First Time
Under New Management.
A program of vesceptlonal merit was
rendered last night at the regular week
ly concert at the Seaman's Institute,
corner of Front and Flanders streets,
and more than ordinary Interest was at
tached to it, In view of the fact that
it was the first affair of Its kind since
the new chaplain. Kev. A. E. Dalrymple,
assumed chargo. Attorney George S.
Bhepherd, ex-councilman, mariner, and
admiral of this year's Astoria regatta,
presided.
The Swedish Singing Club Columbia
favored the assembled sailors with sev
eral selections, and tue musto was suoh
a treat that upon leaving tha singers
were given three rousing cheers. Nau

livered a deeply Interesting address on
