I anl while the market cannot be said to
be weak. It nevertheless Is not held as
-; high as during recent months. For the
past few months the condition of the
rice market has been badly mixed.' ow
ing to the shortage of supplies. Be
cause of this those who held most of
the stocks held their prices several
notches too high all season and the re
mit was a slow and dribbling demand.

Prices are somewhat .mixed In ' the
orange market at this time. With In
creased arrlvala some handlers -have
been disposed to cut Aha price to the

Tin Treds in Cranberries.
Trade In the cranberry market la
quite good at the present time. While
' the arrival- of eastern stock . baa checked
to some extent the former heavy sale
of local berries, the latter still show-
- Ing a good uetaand at the lower price.
: "With tne Increasing arrivals of eastern
stock there., has been a disposition
among soma of the trade to Shade prices
a fraction and sales are being made
today from $11,50 to $12 a barrel.
' Chickens Are Advanced.
" " An" advance of"about He is shown all
through the chicken market along Front

12c a pound and tnere is talk of a frac

not be confirmed. Mixed JoU moved

last week to 11 Ho today, and there was
a better demand at the latter price. Ite

Turkey Market Is Holding.
. While buyers l.ave shown a disposi

the trade is not expecting any diffl

or good fat stock around 17He.
Srg Market Just About Steady.
While the press of eastern eggs upon
the Portland market during the past
week or so baa been very severe, prices
In the fresh egg market are practically
' unchanged. - Most of the sales of local
. ranch are still being made around S7Hc,
' although once In a while a sale Is made
, at 2f27c. To get the top price, how-
- ever, fhe quality must be perfect for
; some sales of recently arrived ranch
: stock have been made aia low as 35c for
(rood quality. Dirty eggs will not bring
the top. no matter how good the quality.

change In values from yesterday.
There la an undertone of strength
underlying the entire livestock market
with the possible exceDtlon of steers.
and In the latter Una the chances ara
qulta good for an Improvement within
the next week or ten days. While pack-

steers, tne available supplies are not
nearly so neavy as tney were, ana in
consequence the pressure upon the cattle
market Is not no severe.
Sheen are holdlnr about the same as
during the past month, trade being dull

"I expect an Improvement In the
cattle market soon," said Lee M. Lacey
of Hunt ft Lacey today. "The packers
atUl have stocks on hand, but It won't
be long before they will give out and
buyera will again be forced to enter the
market. Hog prices for the future
will depend upon the attitude of the
east, but just at present they are mov

; Steers ara Still Bull.
There Is stilt a dull tone and trade
In the local market for steers." says
Tom Benson of Benson St Gould. "Pack
ers are till showing a surplus of steer
holdings, and it will be somewhere
about the 20th of the month before any
Improvement in prlcea is likely or pos

the price la unchanged. There Is no
change in the - sentiment regarding
sheep."
A year ago today-all lines or live
stock were weak, with a drop of 25c
each in the bog and sheep markets. No
change in cattle.

Are Declared Today.
A Game Cries Trade.
New York, Nov. 11. Specu
lators were very much disap
pointed today when they failed
to receive the announcement of
an Increased payment on South
ern Paclflo and Union Pacific.
The regular dividends were de
clared on both securities. This
brought a sharp reaction in the
stock market.
NeWTork. Nov. 11. In the face of a
generally- weak market, with lower

lative trade in bidding up Colorado
fiAi,thain .fimmnn t rwl R V WAS a WOllU PT.
This" Is the first time Colorado South
ern has been active for some time,
the activity indicating that some one
was. absorbing the stock. For the day
this security shows an advance of 3
points.
The real excitement today, however,
was In the Harriman shares. For some
time the trade has been fed upon
numerous reports to the effect that the
Southern Pacific would pay an extra
dividend, but at the meeting today the
former payment was again decided
upon. This brought about a sharp re
action in all stocks. Southern Pacific
being weakest and lowest. It regained
a large poratlon of the decline previous
to tne close.
The market In aeneral closed sharply
down. In London today American shares
were generally firm at advanced prices.

Alfalfa Meal is Taking-.
The demand for alfalfa meal has
shown a wonderful growth during the
last few months, until the capacity of
the single plant at Echo has been over
taxed. The same management Is now
starting the erection of a new plant at
Wapato, Wash, The latter plant will
have a capacity of 50 tons a day, or
double the size of the grinder at Echo.
As a result of .he Increasing call for
the meal, alfalfa hay is showing a
firmer tone, with generally advanced
prices asked.

SUGAR TRUSTS ARE
GORING EACH OTHER
New , York, Nov. 1 1.- Bitter
war is being waged today be-
'tween the American Sugar Re
fining company and Arbuckle
Bros., who are apparently being
assisted in their light by the
Federal Refining company. Sugar
prices are belrr slashed and the
open sharp " competition has re
aulted In ecalinar down the mar

products to a basis, It is said,
that little more than meets the
cost of production.' . .
The cause of the breach be
tween the two leading producers
can only be surmised, but It is
current gossip In the trade that
Arbuckle Bros, have had a fall
ing out with the new administra
tion of the American Sugar Re
fining company. It Is said that
an agreement reached some
years ago between the late Persi
dent Havemeyer and Arbuckle
Bros, has terminated and that
the latter declined to renew It
