Joe Leslie, who made his escape from
the jail at Vancouver, Wash., Wednes
day night, was recaptured yesterday
afternoon by Deputy Sheriff Leonard.

. A verdict for defendants was given
in the case of Milton W. Smith against
J. X Bayer and Peter Hobkirfc In
Judve Plaland's department of the clr

time ago Smith secured Judgment for
1290 on a note, but a new trial was
ordered by the state supreme court. The
note was originally given oy tne- de
fendants to the Concordia Loan A Trust
company, " for which J. Thorburn Ross

portant witnesses. The trial occupied

That J. H. Truby, ex-asslstant cashier
of the Oregon Trust A Savings bank and
at present a member of the brokerage
firm of Cook A Trubv. and who was
Stricken with an attack of heart failure

given out at the Crystal Springs sani
tarium where he was taken shortly after
the attack, f or a time it was tearea
that Mr. Truby might not rally and
that the attack would Drove fatal", but
the doctors stated this morning that he

Joseph Weloga, proprietor of a
loon at Sixteenth and Savler streets,
was fined $25 by Judge Van . Zante
this morning ror selling liquor to a man
already Intoxicated. Several saloon
men have recently been arrested on thi
charge, and in almost every instance a
rather heavy fine has resulted. Charles
NelKon had been put out of another sa
loon, so drunk was he. hut Patrolman
Swennes found him buying liquor at

The return of Dr. W. H. Heppe to
Grace Methodist Episcopal church for
his second year's work will be cele
brated tonight with a reception to Dr,
Heppe and family, given under the
auspices of the Ladies' Aid society of

Ordinance Passed by Council
Can Be Enforced, Says
City Attorney.
The steam train exclusion ordinance,
passed by the city council nearly 18
months ago, will go into effect Novem
ber 3. An opinion rendered by City
Attorney Kavanaugh says that the
Southern Pacific can be compelled, after
that date, to discontinue the use of the
steam locomotives now in service on
