Such things as insectlveorous or car
nivorous plants, but it is doubtful If
many know w have any such plants
growing right here in south Florida. .
Nevertheless, there is a plant or rather,
herb, growing her, whicn la really in
sectivorous. It is likely that on account of its b
Ing extremely small it has escaped at- ;
tention. In fact It seems to have bean
overlooked by the botanists also, as we
are unable to find It classed among: th
sensitive plants. , -.u-
This is an annual herb, and the en
tire plant Including th flowers, Is of
a deep rich red color. It rarely reaches
a height of more than three inches and
is never so broad. Tha leaves ar '
spatulat when undisturbed and pre-;
sent many small flbrlllao and secret
at their tips a tenacious fluid which is
capable of holding th very small In-,
sects, such as ants and the like, upon
which it feeds. When any of these
get lodged In the fluid and disturb
these fibrlllae th leaves slowly acquire
a deep cup shape and sometimes curl
completely up over their victim. When
they have absorbed the insect they
slowly recover their original shape, :
leaving only th skeleton of th insect
remaining.
These plants grow on th very low,
flat poor and aandy lands. They ap
pear In the lata winter and early
spring months. -
