Well-Meant. Efforts to Re-
lieve Aged Poetess Pile
. .Grief Upon Her.
' (United Press teased Wire.)
Ban Francisco, Nov. 7. -Ina D, Cool
brlth, California' first poetess; persona
friend . of Joaquin Miller, Bret Harte,
Charles -. Warren Stoddard, Gertrude
Atherton, . Ambrose Bierce and other
distinguished authors of the west, has
resigned in anger from the Spinners'
club, the exclusive organisation of
ria.-isH arA waa ain hnnnra w n.,.K.
Her letter of resignation a accom-
'. panted by 590.80. proceeds from a fund
- collected by the club ror her benefit and
, over -which arose the dispute that
ended In her resignation.
Miss Coolbrlth has given out a state
ment of .herTeasons for resigning from
the club and charges that members of
. the club misrepresented her attitude,
j The fund that caused the dispute was
originally called "the Ina D. Coolbrlth
. fund," and was later changed to .the
"Spinners' benefit fund." A total of
$1,000 was raised by contributions and
the publication of a book of Miss Coot
brlth'a poems. The money was Invented
In a 6 per cent railroad bond, giving
Miss Coolbrlth $4.15 2-8 a month reve
nue, : .w--..-.
M any of Miss Coolbrlth'a friends,
chief among whom has been. Gertrude
Atherton, nave demanded that the
money be turned ovet, to Miss Coolbrlth,
since the Spinners failed to raise
, enough to get a sufficient revenue for

brith' was accused of haying demanded
the money, and she denies this In ber
'statement..
"The sum total of all moneys re
ceived by me from the Spinners benefit
fund is $90.80, and this I have returned,
withdrawing my name from the roll of
honorary membership," says Miss Cool-
brlth. .....
The statement says In part!
"I distlnetly aver that I have made no
personal demand, nor Instigated any de-
mand, for any part of the capital nor
for Interest. Has anyone ever eon.
sidered for one moment the agony of
humiliation I have suffered while my
nam was being dragged all over the
continent as a mendicant an applicant
for almst .
. "It Is a mistake to say that the Spin
'ners made arrangements for me to live
comfortably at Carmel-by-the-Sea. The
library position there offered me, was
attached to a precarious salary of 110
per month, depending upon collection
from the citUent. , Moreover. I was told
