street further until the ques
tion of the contemplated, street sAjway
franchise hae been settled. Remon.

tor's office by the railway company

' Ths contract for paving Union ave
nue, the largest ever granted for the
Improvement of a Portland street, has
been awarded te the Warren Construc
tion company,sthe contract price being
ltlu,766. Two miles of bard-surface
pavement. It Is thought, will make
Union avenue the busiest street running
north and south on the east side of the
river, but a murmur of disappointment
J heard from the North Alblna end be
cause the Improvement will not be ex
tended to Killingaworth avenue, where
it would connect with a like pavement
already laid.
Secretary John K. Kollock of the
board of school trustees of St Helens'
hall lias filed a remonstrance with the
city auditor against the improvement
of St. Clair street and Park avenue. In
his letter Mr. Kollock says that Bishop
-Charles Beaddlng signed the natltion for
the Improvement with the understand
ing that his name was not to be used
unless a majority of the board also
. signed. The council has approved the
petition. The board of school trustees
now asks that this action be rescinded.
A committee of physicians was ap
pointed last night at the meeting of the
City ' County Medical society to act
In conjunction With the city council and
commutes from the board of health in
attempting to draw up a satisfactory
milk ordinance. Pre. A. W. Smlth,-N.
W. Jones, Ben L. Norden, Catherine
Manlon and A. Tllser were appointed by
the health soolety. The ordinance when
formed will be submitted to the city
council as a substitute for the ordinance

In a bankruptcy petition filed in the
noon, Paul Strain, owner of the Boston
tnra. Portland, and other stores at Ban
Francisco and Marshfield, Or., sets out
that bis liabilities amount to 1128,000
and his assets to somethlnar Ilka $90,000.
Strain entered the San Francisco field
some time ago, which adventure is said
to have cost mm neaviiy. Among mo
creditors In the petition are nine em
ployes in Portland, to whom money Is
due xor services.

land restaurant, fell down a flight of

The civil service commission yester
day denied O. F. Isaacson a rehearing.
Isaacson was formerly a patrolman in
the police service. He was dismissed
