FISH HORN DEALEES

Fish horns- sold like hot cakes on
Washington, street, last night, until the
policemen rounded up four young men
who were charged with peddling with
out licenses.
Ross Nicholas was the chief promoter
of the fish horn syndicate, apparently,
though when cornered he said he was
selling them for a toy store. Prank
Sufla. A. Flngold and George Mitchell
were also arrested.
As a result of the raid on the horn
peddlers the Interior of the police sta
tion looked like a football special bound
from Eugene to Portland on Thanks
giving morning. . There were fish horns
everywhere, fish horns of tin and fish
horns of paper, with and without wood
en mouthpieces and of air colors. Sev
eral large baskets were needed to hold
the collection. ,
The hearing of the vendors In the
police court was postponed until to
morrow. ,

San Francisco, Nov. 4. A fire be
lieved ,to have been of Incendiary or
igin gutted an eight-story steel and
concrete building, owned by John Levi,
at Minna and New Montgomery streets,
at 1:30 o'clock, thlp morning, destroy
ing the stock of Wholesale firms and
causing a total loss of $500,000.
The fire threatened the tall buildings
of the reconstructed downtown district
for a time and It was only after the
hardest work that it was confined to
the one building.
A night watchman found rags soaked
with coat oil on the highest three floors
of the building. "Levi used the top floor
as a store room, for furniture. He pur
chased the building 10 months ago from
Mrs. Dresler, widow of the sugar king.

set out. He was met by deputy sheriffs,
