Miller G. Scouten Stands
in Her Presence as He

Scouten, a wealthy ' real estate dealer,
returned home at S o'clock this morning
and killed himself In the presence -Of
his crippled mother. He was despond
ent over ' reverse, and dlsapolntments
had been nrevlnv on his mind for
months, He shot himself In the. right
ear and fell at his mother's feet.' Hue
was scarcely able to leave her . chair,
but hobbled to the telephone and called
Chief, of Police Croslln. Scouten died
three hour, later at the hospital with
out, regaining- consclousneu.

the voting machines In Alameda county

day in the recount of the vote

The ludicrous result was that Waste

his own home at Berkeley. Brown re

Alameda and Harris got a scattering
vote In the south end where he la
strongest.
A reversal of the mechanism and a re
count will right the mistake.

gether" today in a general movement
for harmony, following the nomination
of Governor A. B. Cummins for United
States senator at the primary yesterday
and the election of Taft and Governor
Carroll, leaving the party In its former

will put an end to the bitter feud that
has existed so long between the stand
patters and the progressives In th.
