' were towed Into port late last night,

which they had sailed from Europe, and

voyage, of the two. The vessel was out
in a storm off Cape Horn August .25.
The heavy seas swept her decks clean
Dusy lor days cutting away wrecsage.
When the storm had subsided it was
discovered there was four feet of water
in the hold. The . ship had sprung a
leak in the storm and the crew had
. to pump for days to keep from sinking.
The vessel finally made this Dort with
the crew exhausted from fighting
against, ma storms.
The four-masted bark California, 198
days from Rotterdam, was caught In
the same hurricane. Her cargo shifted
and she was in danger of sinking every
minute.' When the vessel reached Co
quimbo September 1 there was no food
, on board and the water had Just been
exnaustea.
The crews of both vessel are exhaust
ed from their fight and will rest hers
tor several months before going to sea
again.

Belllngham, Wash., Nov. 2. Clinging
with benumbed hands to the capping or
a fish .trap near Marietta, Peter Fran
els and Roy Shrlver, two Belllngham
seamen, spent 16 terrible hours in the
tempest that raged oh Belllngham bay
yesterday and last night, praying for
assistance which' could not be given
them because of the heavy sea. ' At
o'clock this morning, when they were
at the point of extreme exhaustion,
they .were rescued by a searching party.

til they neared the ship. Suddenly a
fust of wind drove a sear aboard the,

'Marietta shore. With the frail craft
still carrying a full load of water and
evidently not having; been observed by
" any of the ship's company, the two men
were swept Into a ffshtrap sbout half
a mile from the Marietta shore at 3
p. m.
Grasping a pile the men duns' to It
and climbed upon the . capping. With
the Instinct of self-preservation strong
withln them they signaled to Marietta
('for help. By that time, however., the
sea. Impelled by tide and wind, had
, risen considerably and the fishermen on
shore dared not go to the marooned
jnen.
When the the tide had reached Its
maximum the rowboat was carried Into
the flshtrap and there battered into a
wreck. . .
At 1 o'clock this morning KJrk
Fletcher and companions went , out to
, the vessel to sscertaln If Francis and
Shrlver were . aboard. They were told
they had not been seen. Fletcher then
. organ lied a searching' party and early
this morning in a launch ranged the bay
until he found the men on the traps.

Lydgate Comes From Santa Rosalia
for Wheat Cargo.
After a 'stormy voyage of two months
the four-masted British bark Lydgate
reached Columbia . river last night dn
ballast from Santa Rosalia. 8he is Un
der charter to Kerr. Glfford & Co. to
load wheat at this port for Europe
.The Lydgate Is one of the largest
sailing vessels to 'come here this season
for grain, her capacity belnA about 4,
000 tons of wheat. She is. however, not
as large as the British bark Andorlnha,
which sailed hence a few weeks ago
with 190,000 bushels of wheat, bound
for the United Kingdom.

to carry grain to Europe, arrived up
this morning from Astoria and went to
the drydock, where she will be cleaned
and painted. .

, hatches. "About 200.000 feet of lumber

'orient will be the Arabia which left

the federation have come to the con
clusion that it would be well for the

is probable that Theodore Roosevelt Jr.

cialist candidate for president, started
for a tour of the state In a final dash
of the campaigrt today. He will. close
his canvass tonight at Terre Haute,
where a big meeting will be held. Debs
deolared that ' the Interest In Chicago

port of the Socialist party throughout
the middle west The leaders here are
particularly pleased with ths showing in
the last few 'days. '
At the party headquarters It was an
nounced today that the Socialist vote
in Chicsgo will be 100,009.
The leaders of ths other parties to
day estimate the Socialist vote in this
city at 40,080. The Debs men are well
pleased with the results of ths campaign
and say that tha vote tomorrow will
mark a new era In Socialism In ths
United States.

passed, the primary election will take
place this week, Saturday, November 7,
